Chwalinska rallies past Kartal to claim Wuhan Open Title

Maja Chwalinska captured her first WTA Tour title on Sunday, mounting an impressive comeback to defeat Sonay Kartal 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the final of the Wuhan Open.

After a nervous start, the Polish left-hander found her rhythm and used her variety, tactical awareness, and well-placed winners to turn the match around. Chwalinska disrupted Kartal’s momentum with cleverly executed lobs, changes of direction, and precise shots into the corners.

Kartal, ranked 170th in the WTA rankings, made a strong start and dominated the opening set with her powerful forehands. Chwalinska struggled to find her range early on, with several drop shots and slices missing their intended targets.

However, the 25-year-old Polish player responded impressively in the second set. Fresh from a victory over her childhood friend Iga Swiatek, Chwalinska extended the rallies, put pressure on her British opponent, and secured three breaks of serve to level the match at one set apiece.

With the title on the line, Chwalinska carried her momentum into the deciding set. She raised her level at the crucial moments, winning four consecutive games to complete the comeback and seal the biggest triumph of her career.

The victory marks a significant milestone for Chwalinska, who claimed her maiden WTA Tour crown in her second final at this level after overcoming an early setback against a determined Kartal.
