Chelsea goalkeeper Emi Martinez will be sidelined for several weeks after undergoing surgery on a fractured jaw, manager Xabi Alonso confirmed on Friday ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Argentina international sustained the injury during Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Everton last weekend following a collision with defender Jarrad Branthwaite. Martinez was subsequently taken to hospital for treatment.

“He’s been better; he had the surgery. We still need to wait. He will be out for a few weeks. Hopefully less than more,” Alonso told reporters at a press conference.

With Martinez unavailable, Mike Penders is expected to start in goal against Spurs at Stamford Bridge.

“He is ready,” Alonso said. “He has been training well and played a couple of cup games where he showed he has a good level. When he came on against Everton, he showed in a few minutes his personality and qualities.”

The Chelsea manager also provided updates on Malo Gusto and Pep Chavarria, who both missed last weekend’s victory due to fitness concerns.

Alonso confirmed that Gusto has recovered and is available for selection, while Chavarria remains unavailable despite making progress in training.

“Malo Gusto is fine. Pep Chavarria is training a little bit more, but he is not going to make it,” the Spanish coach added.

Chelsea will now look to maintain their momentum against Tottenham while coping with Martinez’s absence between the posts.
