Augustine Boakye scored a dramatic 90th-minute winner to seal Saint-Etienne’s victory over Nantes and extend their lead at the top of Ligue 2 to six points.

The Ghanaian midfielder rose highest to head home a cross from Mahmoud Jaber in the closing moments of Saturday’s encounter, securing all three points for Saint-Etienne.

The decisive strike took Boakye’s tally to six league goals this season, marking his best scoring return in Ligue 2 since joining the French club in 2024.

Saint-Etienne had to battle hard to secure the win, as Nantes defended stubbornly and restricted the space available for the hosts to create clear-cut opportunities. However, Augustine Boakye delivered the decisive moment, finding the net in the 90th minute to break the deadlock and seal the victory.

Speaking after the match, Boakye stressed that collecting all three points was the priority, while also praising the challenge posed by Nantes.

“The most important thing is to win, and we won. Nantes are a good team, but we found a way to win,” he said.

The Ghanaian midfielder also praised Nantes for their defensive discipline, highlighting how effectively they closed down spaces and prevented Saint-Etienne from playing passes behind their backline.

“They defended really well. They defended the spaces and against the passes into space behind the defence, so I think they defended well,” he added.

Boakye, who has become an important attacking option for Saint-Etienne, also spoke about his ambition to improve his goalscoring record throughout the season.

“I hope to score more goals this season,” he said.

The victory further strengthens Saint-Etienne’s position at the top of Ligue 2 as they continue their push for promotion. Boakye’s last-minute winner proved crucial, securing three valuable points in their bid to maintain their place at the summit.
