Athletic Club scored multiple goals in a LaLiga home match for only the second time in nine attempts, cruising to a 4-0 victory over Getafe at San Mames. The defeat also extended Getafe’s miserable away record, leaving them with six consecutive top-flight losses on the road for the first time since April 2016.

Despite suffering a heavy 5-2 defeat to Swiss underdogs Lugano in midweek, Getafe nearly made an early breakthrough. Ramon Terrats tested Unai Simon with a shot from the edge of the penalty area inside the opening five minutes, but his effort lacked the precision to trouble the Athletic goalkeeper.

Athletic soon found their rhythm and took the lead through Alex Berenguer. Standing over a free-kick to the left of the penalty area, Berenguer delivered a deceptive effort that evaded everyone in the box before finding the far corner of the net.

Encouraged by scoring their third first-half goal of the LaLiga campaign, the hosts continued to threaten going forward. Getafe, however, managed to create a few promising opportunities as they searched for an equaliser.

Their hopes took another hit after a costly turnover in midfield allowed Berenguer to release Inaki Williams with an incisive pass through the defence. The former Ghana international kept his composure and calmly finished past David Soria to double Athletic’s advantage.

Berenguer had an early opportunity to extend Athletic’s advantage after the break, but he sent his effort high over the crossbar from a tight angle after receiving a lofted pass into the penalty area.

At the other end, Nemanja Gudelj also failed to hit the target with an effort that sailed over, although the chance proved to be one of Getafe’s few attacking highlights.

Athletic continued to dominate proceedings despite Getafe’s efforts to disrupt their rhythm. Their control eventually paid off in the 70th minute when Berenguer delivered a corner into the box and Aitor Paredes directed a header towards goal.

Although Paredes’ attempt was on target, a deflection off Jean Ives Valou’s heel altered the ball’s path and sent it rolling into the net, leaving David Soria with no chance of making the save.

There was still time for Athletic to add a fourth goal, with Berenguer once again involved in the build-up. Getafe’s hopes suffered another setback when Mario Martin received a late red card for a reckless challenge on Benat Gerenabarrena, conceding a free-kick in the process.

Berenguer delivered a clever flick from the set piece, allowing Yuri Berchiche to unleash a powerful strike into the bottom-left corner and complete the scoring. Berenguer’s influential performance made him the standout player of the match.

Athletic comfortably preserved their unbeaten home record in LaLiga, while Getafe’s struggles continued. The visitors have now managed just one victory in their last 11 matches, leaving them only one point above 18th-placed Espanyol.
