Detroit Pistons centre Jalen Duren is expected to miss at least two weeks after suffering a hamstring strain, the NBA team announced on Sunday.

Duren sustained the injury during the second quarter of Friday’s win over the Miami Heat.

The 22-year-old had played just 10 minutes before leaving the game, making two of his four field-goal attempts and collecting six rebounds.

The Pistons confirmed that Duren, who is averaging 13 points, 7.5 rebounds and two assists per game early in the season, will be reassessed in two weeks.

His absence is expected to cover at least six games, including two matchups against the Philadelphia 76ers and a meeting with defending champions, the New York Knicks.

Duren enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last season, recording a career-best average of 19.5 points per game and earning his first NBA All-Star selection. His contributions helped Detroit secure the top seed in the Eastern Conference.

However, his postseason performances proved more challenging, as Detroit was eliminated in the second round of the playoffs.

The centre also missed the beginning of training camp amid a dispute over a contract extension before eventually agreeing to a reported five-year, $200 million deal.

Detroit will now hope Duren makes a full recovery and returns to the lineup as soon as possible, with his presence in the paint crucial to the team’s ambitions this season.
