Maja Chwalinska withdraws from Tokyo Open due to thigh injury
Maja Chwalinska has withdrawn from this week’s Tokyo Open after sustaining a thigh injury at the Wuhan Open, where she claimed her first WTA Tour title.
The French Open runner-up enjoyed an impressive run in Wuhan, defeating fellow Polish star Iga Swiatek in the semifinals before overcoming Sonay Kartal in the final to secure the biggest title of her career.
However, her latest injury has forced her to pull out of the Tokyo tournament as she continues her recovery.
In a statement shared on Instagram on Monday, Chwalinska explained that she had travelled to Tokyo early in an attempt to regain fitness ahead of the competition.
“I travelled to Tokyo early for physiotherapy and on-court practice, doing everything possible to recover in time, but unfortunately, I am still not ready to compete,” Chwalinska posted.
The Tokyo Open began on Monday, with Chwalinska’s withdrawal coming as a setback following her recent success in Wuhan.
