Cristiano Ronaldo Set for Portugal Comeback After Being Named in Preliminary Squad

Cristiano Ronaldo has been named in Portugal’s preliminary squad for next month’s Nations League fixtures, raising the possibility of his return to international duty following his reported disagreement with coach Jorge Jesus, a Portuguese football federation source told AFP on Tuesday.
The 41-year-old unexpectedly left the Portugal camp on September 30 during the opening round of Nations League qualifiers. He later accused Jesus of going back on his promise to provide him with playing time.
A spokesperson for the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) confirmed reports that Ronaldo could return to the national squad for the upcoming matches against Denmark at home and Wales away on November 14 and 17, respectively.
The federation spokesperson also confirmed that Jesus will announce his final squad on November 6, when it will become clear whether the Al-Nassr forward has secured his place for the two fixtures.
The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) announced last week that Ronaldo had received a 30-day suspension for leaving the national team camp without permission. However, the punishment was backdated, meaning the suspension is due to expire by the end of this week.
Ronaldo apologised to supporters earlier in October and said he would accept whatever disciplinary action the federation decided to impose.
In a social media statement shortly after leaving his teammates, the forward accused coach Jorge Jesus of failing to honour a promise to give him playing time against Norway. However, he made it clear that he had no intention of retiring from international football.
Ronaldo also revealed another source of disagreement, claiming that Jesus had failed to address several points they had previously agreed upon during a press conference before the match against Denmark.
Despite the controversy, Portugal have enjoyed an impressive Nations League campaign, winning all four of their matches, including three without Ronaldo. The reigning champions secured qualification for the quarter-finals with two games remaining.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner remains the leading goalscorer and most-capped player in men’s international football history.
Ronaldo, who made his Portugal debut in 2003 at the age of 18, has previously indicated that this will “probably” be his final year as a professional footballer.
