PSG Outclass Aalborg Handball to Win Champions League Group B Showdown

Paris Saint-Germain Handball proved too strong for Aalborg Handball, securing a convincing 32-25 victory in Paris on Wednesday evening to claim top spot in Group B of the EHF Champions League.

The result ended Aalborg’s hopes of completing the preliminary group stage unbeaten, as the Danish side suffered its first defeat of the campaign against the French powerhouse.

Although both teams had already secured qualification for the next phase, the match carried significant importance because points earned against other advancing teams are carried into the Champions League main round.

As a result, Aalborg will begin the next phase with one point from its draw against PSG in Denmark, while the Parisians take three points forward following their victory.

PSG Take Control Before Half-Time

The contest began evenly, with both sides competing closely during the opening stages. However, PSG gradually established control towards the end of the first half, capitalising on Aalborg’s attacking mistakes to build a crucial advantage.

A major factor in the hosts’ strong performance was the impressive display of Danish goalkeeper Mikkel Lovkvist, who produced several important saves to frustrate the visitors.

Aalborg struggled to convert its attacking opportunities and committed too many unforced errors, allowing PSG to take advantage and move ahead.

By half-time, the Danish champions found themselves trailing 15-11, leaving them with a difficult task in the second period.

Landin’s Saves Fail to Spark Aalborg Comeback

Aalborg responded by introducing veteran goalkeeper Niklas Landin in place of Fabian Norsten, and the experienced shot-stopper immediately made his presence felt with several important saves.

The Danish side appeared to be gaining momentum when Patrick Wiesmach reduced the deficit to 17-15, putting pressure on the hosts and raising hopes of a comeback.

PSG head coach Stefan Madsen reacted by calling a timeout to reorganise his team and prevent Aalborg from getting closer.

The decision proved decisive. PSG regained control as Aalborg continued to lose possession and squander clear scoring opportunities.

The French side quickly extended its advantage to 22-16, leaving the visitors facing an increasingly difficult challenge.

From that point onwards, PSG maintained its composure and refused to allow Aalborg back into the contest. The hosts comfortably managed the closing stages to secure a seven-goal victory, finishing 32-25.

Aalborg Turn Attention to Champions League Main Round

Despite the disappointing result, Aalborg Handball can now focus on the next stage of the competition, which is scheduled to begin on 18 November.

The Danish champions will face another demanding series of matches in a group featuring PSG, Veszprém, Wisła Płock, MT Melsungen and Füchse Berlin.

With points carried over from the preliminary stage, PSG’s victory gives the French club an early advantage heading into the main round.

Aalborg, meanwhile, will need to regroup and improve its attacking efficiency if it hopes to challenge Europe’s leading clubs and maintain its ambitions in the EHF Champions League.

Wednesday’s encounter highlighted the fine margins at the highest level of European handball, with PSG making the most of Aalborg’s mistakes to secure a valuable win at a crucial stage of the competition.
