Kimi Antonelli battles illness ahead of Mexican GP as he gets second chance to Clinch Title

Antonelli battles illness ahead of Mexican GP as Championship Glory Looms
The biggest weekend of Kimi Antonelli’s young motorsport career got off to an unexpected start on Thursday after the Italian was forced to miss media commitments at the Mexican Grand Prix due to a viral illness.
Rather than attending press conferences and speaking to journalists at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, the 20-year-old was advised to rest and recover ahead of what could become a historic weekend in Formula 1.
Antonelli is on the verge of becoming the youngest world champion in F1 history and the first Italian to claim the drivers’ title in 73 years.
A spokesperson for Mercedes confirmed that Antonelli was feeling unwell and had been excused from media duties as a precaution.
“Kimi is feeling under the weather with a viral illness, so has been excused from media duties today as a precaution to give him the chance to rest,” the team said.
“We expect him to be back tomorrow.”
The championship leader would normally have faced a busy schedule ahead of such a potentially decisive race, but his immediate priority is now making a full recovery.
Antonelli currently holds a commanding 123-point advantage over his closest challenger and Mercedes team-mate George Russell, with Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari sitting 124 points behind.
The Italian has a significant opportunity to secure the championship in Mexico. Even if Russell wins the race, Antonelli will be crowned champion by finishing ninth or higher. He will also claim the title if either of his two remaining challengers fails to win, regardless of whether he scores points or takes part in the race.
Antonelli was not the only driver experiencing health problems ahead of the second round of Formula 1’s three-race trip across the Americas, following events in Texas and ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix.
Cadillac’s Valtteri Bottas was also feeling unwell and was excused from his scheduled activities.
The American team confirmed its decision in a statement, saying it had “taken the decision to allow him a day of rest, to support his recovery”.
Should Antonelli be unable to participate in the Mexican race, Mercedes reserve driver Frederik Vesti is expected to be a potential replacement. Vesti could make his Formula 1 race debut after previously taking part in six free practice sessions for the team.
Wolff Urges Mercedes to Remain Focused
Despite the growing excitement surrounding the championship, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has urged the team to remain calm and focused as they approach a potentially historic double-title achievement.
“The championships are moving closer, but our mindset does not change,” Wolff said, emphasising the importance of discipline and concentration.
“Thinking about the outcome won’t help us achieve it,” he added.
“We will stay disciplined, take each session as it comes and concentrate on doing all the fundamentals well.
“That includes Fred (Vesti), who will take over George (Russell)’s car in opening practice. He is an important member of our team and we know we can rely on him to deliver precise, useful feedback as we work through our Friday programme.”
With the championship within reach, Mercedes will be hoping Antonelli recovers quickly and is fit to return to the cockpit for a potentially defining weekend in Mexico.
