Karl Vilips produced a superb opening-round performance, carding ten birdies to take a one-shot lead over Japan’s Kensei Hirata at the 2026 Mexico Open at Vidanta Vallarta.

The Australian started steadily with five consecutive pars before finding his rhythm, recording ten birdies and one bogey over the remainder of his round to finish nine-under-par.

It was the 25-year-old Vilips’ best round of 2026, putting him in a strong position to challenge for his highest finish of the season. His current best result is a tied-13th place at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in late April.

One of the standout moments came on the ninth hole, where Vilips recovered brilliantly after sending his drive into a bunker on the right side of the fairway. He struck an impressive shot from 151 yards, leaving himself a 20-foot putt that he confidently converted for birdie.

Vilips is currently the eighth-highest-ranked Australian in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) at 232nd and sits 141st in the PGA Tour Order of Merit, having earned US$653,000 (AU$929,000) in prize money this year.

With the PGA Tour changing its exemption criteria for the 2027 season, offering full playing privileges to the top 100 players instead of the previous top 125, Vilips could otherwise have faced a battle to retain his Tour card. However, his maiden PGA Tour victory in Puerto Rico last year, during his debut campaign, secured him a two-year exemption running through the end of 2027.

Meanwhile, world number 28 Ben Griffin remains among the leading contenders after the American opened with a seven-under-par 64.

“I had it on a string for the first nine,” Vilips said after his round.

“I got a little loose in the middle and got it back on course toward the end of the round.

“It was lift, clean and place today so being in the fairway was a must for me and I took advantage of those drives that I hit.”
