Oklahoma City Thunder face another injury blow as Chet Holmgren set to miss up to 10 weeks

The Oklahoma City Thunder have suffered another significant setback early in the 2026/27 NBA season, with star big man Chet Holmgren expected to miss between eight and 10 weeks following surgery on his knee.

The injury comes as another major blow for the defending champions, who are already dealing with the long-term absence of Jalen Williams, who has been ruled out for the remainder of the campaign.

Despite having considerable depth across their roster, Oklahoma City are now facing an increasingly difficult challenge as injuries continue to affect key players.

Holmgren’s Injury Adds to Thunder’s Growing Concerns

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Holmgren underwent surgery on Friday to repair a small tear in his patellar tendon, with the procedure expected to keep him sidelined for approximately two months.

The 24-year-old has been an important part of Oklahoma City’s success, particularly alongside starting centre Isaiah Hartenstein in the frontcourt.

With Holmgren unavailable, the Thunder will need to rely more heavily on Jaylin Williams and Kenrich Williams to provide additional support in the paint.

Meanwhile, players such as Ajay Mitchell and Alex Caruso will be expected to contribute as the team looks to maintain its competitive level during a challenging period.

Fortunately, superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander remains healthy and available to lead the team as they attempt to navigate their growing injury problems.

Could Oklahoma City Turn to the Trade Market?

Holmgren’s absence could also increase the pressure on the Thunder’s front office to explore potential reinforcements.

Trade speculation had already started following Jalen Williams’ injury, with Oklahoma City seemingly unwilling to abandon its ambitions for the 2026/27 campaign.

The organisation has already added free agent Ochai Agbaji, but has yet to make a major move to strengthen its roster.

With another key player now sidelined, the Thunder may have to reconsider their options, particularly as they look to remain competitive in an increasingly demanding Western Conference.

Thunder Still Have NBA Championship Ambitions

Despite the setbacks, Oklahoma City have made a promising start to the season, with their 4-1 record suggesting they remain a formidable contender.

The franchise will be hoping to build on its 2025 NBA Championship success and make another deep playoff run, with the ultimate ambition of returning to the NBA Finals.

There is also some positive news surrounding Holmgren, as his injury is not expected to end his season. If his recovery progresses as anticipated, he could return to the lineup in early 2027.

However, with Jalen Williams already unavailable for the remainder of the campaign, Holmgren’s absence represents another major challenge for a Thunder team that had hoped to defend its championship without significant disruption.
