ASA unveils ambitious water polo development programme as Sergey Markotch takes national team helm

The Aquatic Sports Association of Malta (ASA) has unveiled an ambitious development programme aimed at strengthening Maltese water polo, with the appointment of Sergey Markotch as national team coach and technical director among several major initiatives announced for the coming season.
Addressing a press conference on Saturday, ASA President Karl Izzo outlined the association’s plans for the 2026/27 season and beyond, highlighting the forthcoming Enemed Cup, Malta’s international commitments in 2027 and a renewed emphasis on developing local talent.
Izzo stressed that the initiatives formed part of a long-term strategy designed to improve technical standards, strengthen the competitiveness of Maltese water polo internationally and provide greater opportunities for emerging players.
The most significant announcement was the appointment of Sergey Markotch as Head Coach of Malta’s men’s national water polo team and Technical Director.
A two-time Olympic bronze medallist, Markotch brings considerable international experience to the position and is already a familiar figure in Maltese water polo.
The experienced coach enjoyed considerable domestic success with Neptunes, guiding the club to five consecutive national championship titles and establishing himself as one of the most successful coaches in recent Maltese water polo history.
His appointment is expected to provide greater technical direction to the national team while ensuring continuity in the development of players progressing through the various age groups.
Izzo described the decision as an important investment in the future of the sport, underlining the association’s determination to establish a sustainable national programme capable of competing consistently at international level.
“Sergey’s appointment is not simply about preparing a national team for its next international competition. It represents an investment in knowledge, experience and technical excellence, with the broader ambition of establishing a competitive and sustainable national programme capable of progressing consistently at international level,” Izzo said.
The ASA President also highlighted the importance of strengthening the domestic competitive structure, with the Enemed Cup 2026/27 forming part of the association’s programme for the coming months.
Meanwhile, Malta faces an extensive international calendar in 2027, which will provide opportunities for the national team to test itself against foreign opposition and continue building experience at the highest possible level.
The association believes that combining experienced technical leadership with sustained investment in player development will help bridge the gap between domestic competition and the demands of international water polo.
Izzo reiterated that the ASA’s objectives extend beyond immediate results, with particular attention being given to establishing a clear pathway for young players to progress towards senior international representation.
The latest initiatives underline the association’s determination to consolidate the progress achieved by Maltese water polo in recent years while laying the foundations for further development and greater international competitiveness.
