Antonelli beats Verstappen to Austin pole as Hamilton and Russell face tough qualifying

Kimi Antonelli strengthened his bid for a maiden Formula One world championship on Saturday by beating Max Verstappen to pole position for the United States Grand Prix in Austin.

The 20-year-old Italian could secure the drivers’ title on Sunday if he wins the race, provided his Mercedes teammate George Russell finishes outside the top eight and Lewis Hamilton ends the race outside the top four.

Antonelli claimed his seventh pole position of the season, ending an eight-race wait, with a fastest lap of 1:34.035. He finished 0.179 seconds ahead of his closest rival, Verstappen, while Red Bull teammate Isack Hadjar secured an impressive career-best third place.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc qualified fourth, ahead of Russell in the second Mercedes and seven-time world champion Hamilton in the second Ferrari.

Antonelli currently holds a 102-point advantage over Russell in the championship standings. He is chasing a place in history as Formula One’s youngest-ever world champion and aims to become the first Italian driver to win the title since Alberto Ascari achieved the feat with Ferrari in 1953.

“We got pole, so we’ll try to win tomorrow,” Antonelli said. “Max has been very quick and did an incredible job in qualifying, so it’s not going to be easy.”

The young Mercedes driver added that getting a strong start would be crucial, saying he hoped to lead into the first corner and control the pace despite the expected close competition.

Antonelli was pleased with his performance but admitted the final qualifying session was challenging because of gusty and unpredictable winds.

Verstappen Settles for Second as Ferrari Struggle

Verstappen, who won the United States Grand Prix from pole position last year, will be aiming for a fifth victory in Austin after qualifying second.

The Dutchman admitted he struggled to find the right balance during the decisive Q3 session, despite showing strong pace earlier in qualifying.

“Q3 was not good. Q1, Q2 it was nice, but for whatever reason, with both sets of tyres, I just didn’t have the balance,” Verstappen explained. He added that he had made no major mistakes but lacked the grip needed to challenge for pole.

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and reigning world champion Lando Norris qualified seventh and eighth respectively, while Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad finished ninth. However, Lindblad faces a five-place grid penalty, with teammate Liam Lawson completing the top ten.

Track Limits Add Pressure in Austin Qualifying

Qualifying took place in hot, cloudy conditions at the Circuit of The Americas, where drivers had to remain particularly careful about exceeding track limits.

The issue had already dominated much of the weekend, with 207 lap times deleted on Friday and another 42 removed during final practice.

The pressure was especially evident for Pierre Gasly, who needed a late flying lap to escape the opening qualifying session after his earlier time was deleted for a track-limits infringement.

The session began with the two Cadillac cars leading the way, followed by the American Haas team, before Leclerc set an early benchmark of 1:35.200. Verstappen then moved into contention as the leading drivers began to establish their pace.

During the final top-ten shootout, Antonelli set the initial benchmark ahead of the two Red Bulls, with Leclerc sitting fourth. Ferrari appeared unable to match the improving pace of Mercedes and its rising Italian star.

However, Antonelli delivered when it mattered most, finding extra speed on his final attempt to secure pole position for the United States Grand Prix.

With a potentially historic championship opportunity ahead of him, the Mercedes youngster will now look to convert his qualifying success into a race victory on Sunday.
