Arthur Fils makes history with first Masters 1000 Triumph in Cincinnati

Arthur Fils claims first Masters 1000 title in Cincinnati
Arthur Fils produced a stunning performance to defeat Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 and claim his first ATP Masters 1000 title in Cincinnati on Sunday.
The 22-year-old Frenchman secured the biggest title of his career just one week before the US Open, and his victory is expected to propel him from 21st to a career-high No. 11 in the ATP rankings.
Fils made an explosive start, taking the opening set 6-3 while dropping just three points on his serve. Tiafoe responded strongly in the second set as Fils began to make more unforced errors, leveling the match 1-6.
However, after receiving treatment for his right hip before the deciding set, Tiafoe struggled to match Fils’ intensity. The Frenchman quickly regained control and raced through the final set 6-0 to seal a memorable victory.
Fils Overcomes Injuries to Reach Career Milestone
Speaking during the trophy ceremony, an emotional Fils said his first thought was to call his mother after his father had watched the final remotely.
“That was my dad on the phone, now I need to call my mom,” Fils said, explaining that his father had missed attending one of his tournaments for the first time this year.
“Wow, that feels good, that feels good. It’s a lot of training, a lot of things, a lot of sacrifice.”
Fils has endured a difficult period with injuries, missing much of 2025 because of a back injury before spending several months this year sidelined by a hip problem.
“To be able to win one title like this means a lot to me,” he added.
The Frenchman was pushed hard in the final game, saving two match points before creating another opportunity with a perfectly executed lob. Tiafoe eventually sent a forehand beyond the baseline, allowing Fils to celebrate after 98 minutes of play.
Fils Dominates the Deciding Set
Fils immediately established control in the opening set, breaking Tiafoe on his way to a 3-0 lead. He dropped just one point across the first three games and consistently dictated rallies from the baseline.
Although Tiafoe gradually found his rhythm, the American was unable to put significant pressure on Fils’ serve. The Frenchman closed out the set in just 29 minutes, finishing it with his eighth ace.
The second set followed a completely different pattern.
Fils saved three break points in the second game but eventually sent a forehand long, allowing Tiafoe to break and move 3-0 ahead. The American took full advantage of his opportunities and leveled the match after just 54 minutes.
Tiafoe then called for the trainer to receive treatment on his right hip, an issue that has reportedly troubled him in recent weeks.
Fils took advantage of the situation in the third set, raising his level once again and breaking Tiafoe twice to establish a commanding 4-0 advantage. From there, he never looked back, completing a dominant 6-0 deciding set and lifting the biggest trophy of his career.
A Breakthrough Moment for Arthur Fils
The victory also marked another painful Cincinnati final for Tiafoe. The American previously lost the tournament’s championship match to Jannik Sinner in 2024.
For Fils, however, the win represents the culmination of months of hard work and a difficult journey back from injury.
“I started the first set very, very strong,” Fils said. “In the second set I lost a bit of focus; he put me under pressure.”
The Frenchman revealed that he gave himself a motivational talk after the second set.
“If you are going to lose, it cannot get worse than this. You need to fight.”
That mindset proved decisive.
“I don’t have any words to describe this win,” Fils added. “There is a bit of relief.”
After battling injuries and setbacks, Fils’ Cincinnati triumph could prove to be the defining moment of his young career. With the US Open just around the corner, the Frenchman heads into the final Grand Slam of the season with confidence, momentum and a new career-high ranking within reach.
“It was a hell of a week. We made a hell of a job, and it is not done yet.”
