Aston Villa complete João Gomes signing from Wolves in £38m deal

Aston Villa have completed the signing of Brazil international João Gomes from Wolves in a deal reportedly worth £38 million, strengthening Unai Emery’s midfield ahead of the new season.

Villa accelerated their move for Gomes after Chelsea reached an agreement to sign Morgan Rogers from the Midlands club, prompting Emery to quickly secure a replacement.

The 25-year-old midfielder, who has earned 10 caps for Brazil, attracted interest from Atlético Madrid, but ultimately chose a move to Villa Park after being convinced by Emery’s long-term project.

Gomes leaves Wolves after making 130 appearances for the club following his arrival from Flamengo in 2023. Despite his impressive performances, he was unable to prevent Wolves from being relegated from the Premier League last season.

Villa Continue Squad Rebuild

The arrival of Gomes is the latest move in what has become a major rebuild of Aston Villa’s squad following their Europa League triumph.

Morgan Rogers is expected to complete a £117 million transfer to Chelsea, a deal that would make him the most expensive English player in football history.

Villa have also reshaped their midfield in recent weeks after selling Youri Tielemans to Manchester United, while Amadou Onana is expected to miss several months after suffering a serious knee injury during the FIFA World Cup.

Earlier this month, Villa broke their club transfer record by signing Johan Manzambi from Freiburg in a deal worth around £50 million, underlining the club’s ambition ahead of the new campaign.

Wolves Pay Tribute to Gomes

Following the transfer, Wolves technical director Matt Jackson praised Gomes for his professionalism and commitment during his time at Molineux.
