With the September 1 transfer deadline fast approaching, Aston Villa’s weaknesses have become increasingly difficult to ignore.

Their concerns were laid bare on the opening weekend of the 2026/27 Premier League season, when the Midlanders suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat away to Brighton. Their next challenge will be even tougher, with reigning champions Arsenal awaiting them in their upcoming league fixture.

Difficult Transfer Window for Aston Villa

Aston Villa produced a disappointing display against Brighton, highlighting just how much the squad has lost during the summer transfer window.

The Villans are now without the influential Morgan Rogers, the technical quality of Youri Tielemans and the defensive reliability of Ezri Konsa, with all three players having departed the club this summer.

The situation could become even more concerning if potential exits for Emiliano Martinez and Ollie Watkins are completed.

With the squad already looking short in several areas, manager Unai Emery and the Aston Villa hierarchy are working hard to strengthen the team before the transfer deadline.

One player Unai Emery is reportedly keen to bring to Villa Park, following a potential move for Nicolas Jackson, is Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta. However, the South London club have so far rejected Aston Villa’s approaches for their leading forward.

Crystal Palace have already seen several key players leave in recent seasons, including Michael Olise, Eberechi Eze, Marc Guehi and Maxence Lacroix. As a result, manager Pierre Sage is understandably eager to keep hold of Mateta, particularly given the Frenchman’s importance to the team.

Mateta Has Been a Key Player for Crystal Palace

Since joining Crystal Palace in 2020, Mateta has established himself as an important figure at Selhurst Park.

The French striker has made 203 appearances for the club across all competitions, scoring 62 goals and registering 13 assists.

His physical strength and ability to hold up the ball have made him a valuable option in attack. While Mateta can be viewed as a more traditional centre-forward because of his effectiveness as a target man, his overall qualities make him far more versatile than that description suggests.

To succeed in the modern game, a striker needs to offer more than simply holding up the ball and finding the back of the net, and Mateta has demonstrated that he possesses those additional qualities.

His defensive contribution has improved significantly during his time in South London. His tackle success rate stood at just 14.29% during his first Premier League season, but that figure climbed as high as 68.18% in the 2023/24 campaign.

Strong Work Rate Alongside His Goals

Mateta’s defensive numbers also highlight his willingness to contribute without the ball. He has recorded 116 headed clearances and 154 clearances overall, demonstrating his commitment to helping his team defensively when required.

That work rate could be particularly appealing to Unai Emery, who expects maximum effort from his players both in and out of possession.

Although Mateta is not the quickest striker over long distances, he is capable of covering ground effectively when required. He has also regained possession 331 times during his Palace career, including 183 recoveries in midfield areas.

It is inside the penalty area where Mateta is at his most dangerous, particularly when crosses are delivered into the areas he occupies. His physical presence and aerial ability make him a constant threat for defenders.

Over the past few seasons, Mateta has registered 322 shots, with his shooting accuracy ranging from 33.33% to 62.26%. However, improving his overall conversion rate would be an important area for the striker to address.

Mateta’s Contract Situation

While several aspects of Mateta’s game have improved, his shot conversion rate has moved in the opposite direction. After recording a healthy 37.5% conversion rate earlier in his Palace career, that figure dropped to 20% last season.

Nevertheless, his goalscoring record underlines his ability in front of goal. Three hat-tricks and seven two-goal games, along with 10 successful penalties from 12 attempts, demonstrate the threat he poses in the final third.

However, Palace face an important decision over his future. Mateta has less than a year remaining on his current contract and will be able to discuss a pre-contract agreement with interested clubs in just four months.

With no indication so far that the French striker is ready to commit to a new deal, the possibility of losing him for nothing when his contract expires remains a genuine concern for Crystal Palace.

Reports suggest Mateta has even approached FIFA in an attempt to have his current contract annulled, claiming that the agreement is invalid. That development means Crystal Palace cannot afford to ignore the possibility of the striker seeking an exit on his own terms.

If the Eagles want to receive a transfer fee for the 6ft 4in forward, they may need to open negotiations with Aston Villa sooner rather than later.

From Mateta’s perspective, the prospect of playing Champions League football could be a major attraction. With less than a week remaining before the transfer window closes, his future is likely to become much clearer in the coming days.
