Barcelona Complete Cancelo Return as Flick Bolsters Defensive Options

Barcelona have completed the signing of Portuguese full-back João Cancelo on a free transfer, with the defender agreeing to a contract that runs until June 30, 2029. The move marks Cancelo’s third spell with the Catalan club.
Cancelo became a free agent after mutually ending his contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, paving the way for his return to Camp Nou on a permanent basis.
The 32-year-old previously spent two loan spells with Barcelona. His first came during the 2023/24 season, before he returned to the club in January 2026 and helped Hansi Flick’s side retain the LaLiga title.
During his previous periods with Barcelona, Cancelo made 65 appearances, scoring six goals and providing nine assists. His versatility and attacking ability have made him a valuable option for Flick, who is now able to count on the Portugal international as part of his defensive plans for the new campaign.
Cancelo began his professional career in Portugal before gaining experience in Spain and Italy. He later joined Manchester City in 2019, where he enjoyed a successful spell and won several major trophies, including the Premier League and Champions League.
He subsequently played for Bayern Munich on loan before moving to Al-Hilal in 2024. After returning to Barcelona for another loan spell in 2026, Cancelo has now made his stay permanent as the Spanish champions prepare for another LaLiga and Champions League campaign.
Cancelo spent the 2023/24 season on loan with Bayern Munich and Barcelona before making a permanent move to Al-Hilal in 2024.
He now joins Rodri, Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi as Barcelona’s latest arrivals this summer. However, the Catalan club remain in the market for another striker following the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres.
Barcelona had identified Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez as a potential target, but their hopes of signing the Argentina international have been dashed after Atletico made it clear they are unwilling to sell him.
Hansi Flick’s side will begin their new LaLiga campaign on Sunday when they travel to face Elche.
