Coming into the final matchday, Japan knew that a single point would be enough to guarantee a top-two finish. Sweden, meanwhile, faced a tougher task, needing a victory to leapfrog their Asian opponents into second place.

Japan wasted no time asserting their authority on the game, dictating the tempo from the opening whistle and forcing Graham Potter’s Swedish side deep into their own half. The Japanese celebrations were short-lived, however, as Sweden responded with fierce determination. Just six minutes later, Anthony Elanga found space 20 yards out and unleashed a ferocious strike that flew into the back of the net to restore parity.

The equalizer completely shifted the momentum, putting Sweden in the ascendancy. The closing stages turned into a gripping, end-to-end contest, but Japanese shot-stopper Zion Suzuki stood tall. Suzuki produced a string of crucial saves, denying both Alexander Isak and Elanga goals that would have sent Potter’s men through in second place.

Round of 32 Matchups Locked In

With the Netherlands defeating an already eliminated Tunisia side to comfortably claim top spot in Group F, the final standings are set.

As group runners-up, Japan’s reward is a blockbuster Round of 32 meeting against Group C powerhouses Brazil. Meanwhile, Sweden moves on to the knockout phase with their next assignment scheduled against the winner of Group B, E, or I.
