A group of four former Bayern Munich players, including German World Cup winners Thomas Muller and Mats Hummels, have joined an investment consortium that has completed the purchase of a majority stake in Portuguese club Estrela da Amadora.

Estrela confirmed the completion of the takeover on Tuesday, announcing that an international consortium led by ADvantage and LEAD, with backing from the KI Group, had acquired 90% of the club’s SAD share capital.

The new ownership group brings together investors with backgrounds in sports, finance and technology, alongside several high-profile figures from international football.

Among the strategic investors are former Bayern Munich stars Thomas Muller and Mats Hummels, as well as Switzerland goalkeeper Yann Sommer and French defender Lucas Hernandez.

The move represents a significant change in ownership for Estrela, with the new investors expected to bring their experience and connections from the world of international football to the Portuguese side.

Portuguese newspaper A Bola reported that the investment group paid around €40 million ($46.65 million) to acquire the majority stake in the Primeira Liga club.

Estrela da Amadora was founded in 2020, nine years after its similarly named predecessor was dissolved following financial difficulties.

The club finished 15th in the Primeira Liga last season and will now enter a new era under its international ownership group.

Former Germany international Hummels retired from professional football last year, while 36-year-old Muller currently plays for Vancouver Whitecaps in Major League Soccer.

Lucas Hernandez is on the books of Paris Saint-Germain, while Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer currently represents Belgian side Club Brugge.

Muller and Hummels were members of the Germany squad that lifted the World Cup in 2014. Hernandez, meanwhile, helped France win the tournament four years later in Russia.
