Arsenal maintained their flawless start to the Premier League season with a battling 2-0 victory away to Sunderland, extending their impressive head-to-head record to just one defeat in their last 30 league encounters (W19, D10).

The Gunners were aiming to begin a top-flight campaign with four consecutive wins for only the sixth time in their history, and Arsenal made an energetic start on Wearside.

The visitors created the first major opportunity when Bukayo Saka found space inside the box, but his effort from eight yards lacked accuracy and was comfortably dealt with by Robin Roefs. Sunderland responded at the other end, where Daniel Ballard failed to make proper contact with a dangerous delivery from Granit Xhaka at the back post.

Arsenal continued to control possession and search for an opening. Gabriel Magalhaes came close with a low drive that narrowly missed the target, before Kai Havertz produced an instinctive effort that forced Roefs into a sharp save over the crossbar.

Despite spending long periods without the ball, Sunderland remained capable of causing problems. Enzo Le Fee had an opportunity to test the visitors from distance before the interval, but his 25-yard effort drifted harmlessly wide.

Having failed to secure a single Premier League victory against a team that finished in the top five last season (D5, L5), Sunderland raised the intensity after the break.

Their increased pressure almost paid off in the 54th minute when Daniel Ballard was brought down inside the six-yard box by Ezri Konsa, giving the hosts a golden opportunity from the penalty spot.

Enzo Le Fee stepped up to take the penalty, but his firmly struck low effort was brilliantly kept out by David Raya, who made an outstanding save to deny the Sunderland midfielder.

Raya’s crucial intervention inspired Arsenal, and the visitors soon moved in front. Just minutes later, half-time substitute Bruno Guimaraes, formerly of Newcastle United, produced a moment of brilliance, curling a stunning long-range effort into the top corner to score his first goal for Arsenal.

The goal briefly knocked the wind out of Sunderland, and Arsenal had a golden opportunity to extend their advantage when Bukayo Saka found himself in space 12 yards from goal, only to fire his effort straight at Robin Roefs.

Regis Le Bris’ side refused to give up and continued searching for an equaliser. Nordi Mukiele came close on two occasions, narrowly missing with a pair of efforts from close range.

Sunderland kept pushing forward deep into stoppage time, but their attacking approach left them vulnerable at the back. Reinildo brought down Saka inside the penalty area and was shown a second yellow card, reducing the hosts to 10 men.

Saka confidently converted the resulting penalty, securing all three points for Mikel Arteta’s side and moving Arsenal three points clear at the top of the Premier League table at this early stage of the campaign.
