Chelsea have completed the signing of Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez from Premier League rivals Aston Villa in a deal reportedly worth £7.5 million.

The 33-year-old World Cup winner has agreed to a three-year contract with the Blues and will now begin a new chapter of his career at Stamford Bridge.

Martinez expressed his excitement after officially completing the move, insisting that joining Chelsea was an easy decision for both him and his family.

“I’m delighted to be at this football club,” Martinez said. “Coming to Chelsea, for me and my family, was an easy decision to make and I’m just over the moon — I can’t wait to get started.”

The experienced goalkeeper also made it clear that he is determined to compete for major honours with his new club.

“I want to be successful here. I’m someone who wants to win at everything I do, and I want to bring that here to this football club because it’s a football club that wins titles, so I think it’s a good match.”

Martinez added that his passion and commitment will remain central to his approach as he begins life in west London.

“I’m all passion, and I play with my heart. I will give 100 per cent every game, every training session to make the club, my teammates and the supporters proud.”

The move brings an end to Martinez’s six-year spell at Aston Villa, where he made 256 appearances after joining from Arsenal in 2020. He established himself as one of the Premier League’s leading goalkeepers and helped Villa win the Europa League last season.

The Argentina international will now compete for the starting goalkeeper role at Chelsea, with Robert Sanchez also vying for the position.

Chelsea moved swiftly to sign Martinez following Robert Sanchez’s error-prone performance in their opening Premier League victory over Fulham.

Aston Villa had made the 33-year-old available for a transfer after bringing in Japan international goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Parma, paving the way for Martinez to make the move to Stamford Bridge.

Martinez leaves Villa after making 256 appearances for the club since arriving from Arsenal in September 2020. During his six-year spell in the Midlands, he established himself as a key figure and one of the Premier League’s most respected goalkeepers.

The Argentina international was part of the Villa side that lifted the Europa League last season, starting in the final as they defeated Freiburg to claim their first major trophy in three decades.

Martinez also arrives at Chelsea with an impressive international résumé. The goalkeeper is a World Cup winner and two-time Copa America champion, while he has earned 67 caps for Argentina.
