Cristian Volpato Fined After Positive Cocaine Test While Driving
Australian World Cup international Cristian Volpato has been fined after reportedly returning a positive roadside test for cocaine, according to police and local media reports on Wednesday.
Volpato was reportedly stopped for speeding in Sydney in July, when he allegedly tested positive for cocaine during a roadside screening.
New South Wales Police confirmed on Wednesday that a second sample collected during the incident also returned a positive result.
Police said a 22-year-old man, widely identified by Australian media as Volpato, was issued a fine of AU$722 (€450). His driving licence has also been suspended since July.
Volpato is an attacking midfielder with Serie A club Sassuolo and represented Australia at the World Cup after switching his international allegiance from Italy to the Socceroos shortly before the tournament.
The Sydney-born player made three appearances at the World Cup for Australia. Before changing his international allegiance, he represented Italy at several youth levels.
Volpato was born and raised in Sydney before moving overseas to continue his football career and establish himself in Italian football.
