Petar Sučić and Nikola Vlašić were the goalscoring heroes as Croatia fought hard to defeat Ghana 2-1 at the Philadelphia Stadium, leapfrogging the Black Stars to claim second spot in Group L.

While Zlatko Dalić’s side could have safely secured qualification as one of the best third-placed teams by playing out a draw, they signaled their intent for all three points from the very first whistle.

Sučić Breaks the Deadlock

The warning signs were apparent for Carlos Queiroz’s side as early as the 17th minute when Vlašić found a pocket of space 20 yards from goal and clipped the outside of the post with a powerful right-footed effort.

Croatia’s relentless positive intent was rewarded just after the half-hour mark. Sučić picked up the ball and crashed a stunning, venomous 30-yard drive through a crowd of retreating defenders, watching it fly just inside the left-hand post to break the deadlock.

Ghana offered very little in response during the opening 45 minutes, with Antoine Semenyo providing their solitary moment of attacking menace when he fired narrowly wide just before the referee blew for half-time.

Vlašić Responds to Ghana Equalizer

The Black Stars emerged from the interval with renewed energy and improved significantly in the second half. Their sustained pressure finally paid dividends 17 minutes from time. Capitalizing on a momentary lapse in the Croatian defense, Derrick Luckassen snuck in unmarked at a free-kick to side-foot home a clinical equalizer.

However, after profiting from poor marking at one end, Ghana were punished by the exact same defensive frailty just ten minutes later. In the 83rd minute, Vlašić stole in completely completely untracked at a Luka Modrić corner, guiding a precise header home off the inside of the left-hand post to restore Croatia’s advantage.

Group L Final Standings and Knockout Paths

With England comfortably topping the group following their victory over Panama, Croatia finishes as runners-up in Group L with six points. Dalić’s men will now advance to the Round of 32 to face the second-placed team from Group K.

Despite the defeat, Ghana still progresses into the knockout phase in third place with four points, while Panama exits the competition at the bottom of the group.
