The Chicago Cubs joined an elite group in MLB history on Monday, crushing nine home runs in a dominant 17-3 victory over the visiting Milwaukee Brewers.

The emphatic win was a major boost for the Cubs as they continue their push to hold onto a National League Wild Card spot and secure a place in the postseason.

Chicago wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, erupting for four runs in the bottom of the first inning behind two home runs and a single. Alex Bregman then added to the damage in the second, launching a two-run homer to give the Cubs a commanding 6-0 lead.

The Cubs continued their offensive assault in the fourth inning, scoring three more runs while keeping the NL Central-leading Brewers off the scoreboard for six consecutive innings.

By the time Cooper Pratt hit a home run for Milwaukee in the top of the seventh, the damage had already been done. The Cubs responded with another four-run inning, highlighted by two more home runs, to extend their advantage to 13-2.

Bregman was at the heart of Chicago’s historic night, hitting three home runs as the Cubs became just the fifth team in MLB history to hit at least nine homers in a single game.

Chicago joined the Toronto Blue Jays, Cincinnati Reds and New York Yankees among the teams to accomplish the feat. Toronto remains the only team to hit 10 home runs in a game, setting the record against the Baltimore Orioles in 1987.

Before Monday’s remarkable power display, the last team to hit nine home runs in a game was the Yankees, who accomplished the feat twice during the 2025 season.

The Cubs’ offensive explosion also capped a historic month for the franchise. Chicago finished August with a team-record 62 home runs, the second-highest total by any MLB team in a single month. Only the Yankees, who hit 74 home runs in August 2019, have produced more.

Despite the lopsided defeat, the Milwaukee Brewers remain firmly in control of the National League Central, sitting seven games ahead of Chicago in the division standings. The Cubs currently occupy the first Wild Card position in the National League.

The four-game series between the two teams continues Tuesday as both clubs look to strengthen their postseason positions with the MLB regular season approaching its September 27 conclusion.
