Djokovic keeps ATP finals hopes alive as Rybakina leads the headlines in Tokyo

Novak Djokovic continues his push for qualification for the ATP Finals this week as the men’s tour heads to Basel and Vienna for two key indoor hard-court tournaments. Meanwhile, the WTA Tour concludes its Asian swing with events in Tokyo and Guangzhou, featuring several big names looking to finish the season strongly.
Here is our preview of the week’s action across the ATP and WTA Tours.
Swiss Indoors Basel
The battle for places at the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin takes centre stage in Basel, where 39-year-old Novak Djokovic will compete at the Swiss ATP 500 tournament for the first time since 2011.
Currently 11th in the Live Race, the Serbian faces France’s Ugo Humbert in the opening round as he aims to strengthen his bid for a record-extending 19th appearance at the ATP Finals.
Djokovic is positioned in the same half of the draw as top seed Ben Shelton, who will be eager to regain momentum after a disappointing third-round exit at the Shanghai Masters. Three other players hoping to secure their places in Turin are also competing in Basel: Arthur Fils, Rafael Jodar and Taylor Fritz.
Second seed Fils will face either a qualifier or a lucky loser, while Jodar meets Alejandro Tabilo. Fritz, meanwhile, begins his campaign against Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Away from the qualification battle, Basel will also provide an emotional farewell for three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka, who is set to retire from professional tennis after the tournament. The 41-year-old opens against eighth seed Jiri Lehecka.

Vienna Open
Carlos Alcaraz headlines a strong field in Vienna as the Spaniard looks to bounce back from an unexpected early exit in Shanghai and make a strong start to his European indoor hard-court campaign.
The world number three faces a challenging opening match against former top-10 player Karen Khachanov at the ATP 500 event.
Fresh from winning the title in Almaty last week, Daniil Medvedev will also be looking to strengthen his chances of reaching the ATP Finals with another deep run. Currently fifth in the Live Race, the Russian begins against Daniel Merida Aguilar.
It is also an important week for Flavio Cobolli, Alex De Minaur and Frances Tiafoe, all of whom are chasing valuable ranking points in their efforts to qualify for the season-ending tournament in Turin next month.
Top seed Alexander Zverev is another major attraction in Austria. The German opens his campaign against wildcard Martin Landaluce, with a quarter-final run set to have a significant impact on his ranking prospects.

Pan Pacific Open
Iga Swiatek and Marta Kostyuk are among the high-profile withdrawals from the Pan Pacific Open due to injury, ruling them out of the Tokyo tournament as the WTA season approaches its conclusion.
Despite their absences, the WTA 500 event features an intriguing field led by world number one Elena Rybakina and Wuhan champion Maja Chwalinska. Both top seeds receive first-round byes, alongside third seed Diana Shnaider and fourth seed Belinda Bencic.
Home favourite Naomi Osaka faces former world number four Jasmine Paolini in one of the standout first-round clashes.
Elsewhere, Elise Mertens, Alexandra Eala and Leylah Fernandez will be hoping to make the most of their opportunities as the Asian swing draws to a close.

Guangzhou Open
The Guangzhou Open, a WTA 250 tournament, offers players lower down the rankings a valuable opportunity to collect points and finish the Asian swing on a positive note. Ukraine’s Daria Snigur leads the draw as the top seed.
One of the most anticipated opening-round matches sees wildcard Venus Williams take on Austrian teenager Lilli Tagger.
Other notable names in the field include Janice Tjen, Paula Badosa and Sofia Kenin, all of whom will be aiming to put together a strong run at the tournament.
With crucial ranking points available across all four events, the coming week promises plenty of drama as the ATP Finals race intensifies and the WTA Tour wraps up its Asian swing.
