Trump slams LeBron James over alleged disrespect during US national anthem

US President Donald Trump criticised NBA superstar LeBron James on Thursday over what he described as disrespectful behaviour during the US national anthem at a recent NBA game.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump accused James of showing disrespect towards the United States while the national anthem was being performed. The post included a video showing the Los Angeles Lakers star moving his body while standing alongside players from the Philadelphia 76ers.

“While listening to our National Anthem, LeBron James disrespects our Country,” Trump wrote.

He also called on the basketball star to apologise, referencing American military personnel and others who had died serving the country.

“LeBron James should apologize to all of those Great American Warriors and Heroes who died for the American Flag, and all that our Country stands for!” Trump added.

The video shared by Trump showed James standing in line with members of the Philadelphia 76ers. During the anthem, James appeared to swing his arms in a stretching motion and perform movements resembling basketball shooting warm-ups.

A representative for the Philadelphia 76ers did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding Trump’s remarks.

Trump’s History of Criticising Athletes Over the National Anthem

Trump has repeatedly criticised athletes over their conduct during pre-game performances of the US national anthem. The issue became particularly prominent in 2016, when former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick began kneeling during the anthem to protest racial injustice and police brutality.

The protests sparked a nationwide debate about racial equality, patriotism and freedom of expression in professional sports, with Trump frequently speaking out against players who chose to kneel.

In 2018, Trump cancelled a planned White House visit for the Philadelphia Eagles, the reigning Super Bowl champions at the time, after a disagreement over his expectation that players stand during the national anthem.

LeBron James’ Role in Social Justice Campaigns

LeBron James has also become one of the most prominent athlete voices in the fight for racial justice and social equality. In 2020, he emerged as a leading supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement, using his platform to highlight issues affecting Black communities across the United States.

Throughout his career, James has frequently spoken out on political and social issues while continuing to build his legacy as one of basketball’s most accomplished players. He has also made history by becoming the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.

Trump’s latest comments add to the longstanding debate over the role of professional athletes in political and social discussions, particularly when it comes to expressions of patriotism and behaviour during the national anthem.
