Dreyer the hero and villain as San Diego FC snatch late win over LAFC

Anders Dreyer produced a dramatic late cameo as San Diego FC secured a 1-0 victory over Los Angeles FC on Saturday night, scoring the winning penalty before being sent off in stoppage time.

The Danish international stepped up in the 89th minute and calmly converted from the penalty spot after LAFC defender Ryan Porteous was penalised for handball.

The goal was Dreyer’s eighth of the season and his 27th in 53 appearances for San Diego, proving decisive in a tightly contested encounter.

However, the forward’s night ended on a sour note. Dreyer was shown a second yellow card in the seventh minute of stoppage time after bringing down Heung-min Son to halt a promising LAFC attack.

The red card means Dreyer will now serve a suspension and miss San Diego FC’s next match, despite having secured all three points for his side moments earlier.

Son had entered the contest in impressive form, having scored in each of his previous four matches, but San Diego’s defence managed to keep the former Tottenham Hotspur star off the scoresheet.

The victory provided another important result for San Diego, while Dreyer’s dramatic evening perfectly summed up a match that went down to the wire.

There was also a debut for Elias Aschouri, with the Tunisian winger making his first appearance for San Diego after completing his move from FC Copenhagen.

With Dreyer suspended for the next game, San Diego will now have to find a way to replace their match-winner as they look to maintain their strong run in MLS.
