Elena Rybakina still on course for US Open after recent leg injury

World No. 2 Elena Rybakina says she remains on track to compete at the U.S. Open as she continues to recover from a leg injury suffered at the Cincinnati Open earlier this month.
The two-time Grand Slam champion was forced to retire during the first set of her Cincinnati quarter-final against Iga Swiatek on August 20 after suffering an ankle problem.
Speaking to reporters at Flushing Meadows on Saturday, Rybakina said she is confident in the approach being taken by her team as she works her way back to full fitness.
“I’m quite confident with the decision we are making each day, how to practice, what to do, and especially what can happen in the worst-case scenario. So all these things I feel quite confident,” Rybakina said.
The Kazakh added that she expects to feel much better within the next few days.
“I just feel like it’s just a few more days and I should be very fine.”
Rybakina, 27, revealed that walking was painful for several days following the injury but said she has been encouraged by the progress of her recovery.
“We will see what’s gonna happen in the next few days, but for now it’s been well,” she said.
The former Wimbledon champion also stressed that she would only want to compete if she is confident she can perform at her best.
“I always want to go on court when I’m 100% sure, and it’s the last slam of the year, so I think everyone will want to try to compete.”
Rybakina is scheduled to begin her U.S. Open campaign against American Thea Frodin as she looks to make another deep run at the final Grand Slam tournament of the season.
