Emiliano Martinez admits Argentina’s World Cup success still makes him emotional ahead of Spain final

Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has admitted that reflecting on his country’s incredible run of success over the past few years still leaves him emotional, as the reigning champions prepare to defend their FIFA World Cup crown against Spain.

Speaking to reporters in New York ahead of Sunday’s showpiece at MetLife Stadium, the Aston Villa goalkeeper said his focus remains firmly on lifting another World Cup trophy.

“I am focused only on winning. The whole team has improved so much and this is something we have spent years building,” Martinez said.

Argentina’s Golden Era Continues

Argentina arrive in the 2026 World Cup final looking to add another chapter to one of the nation’s greatest football eras. Since lifting the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar after defeating France on penalties, Lionel Scaloni’s side has also won the Copa America 2021, Copa America 2024, and the 2022 Finalissima against Italy.

Martinez admitted that the achievements have become overwhelming at times.

“Honestly, sometimes I cry to myself thinking about what we have achieved. I am just trying to enjoy the moment because sometimes, as footballers, you don’t really realise where you are in your career.”

The 33-year-old also urged his teammates to embrace the occasion.

“My message to my teammates is that they should enjoy this moment and prepare with smiles on our faces. This is something we will remember forever.”

Martinez Reflects on His 2022 World Cup Heroics

Martinez cemented his place in Argentine football history during the 2022 World Cup final, producing one of the tournament’s defining moments with a dramatic late save to deny Randal Kolo Muani in extra time against France.

Argentina had surrendered a two-goal lead after Kylian Mbappe scored twice late in normal time before completing his hat-trick in extra time. Despite the dramatic turnaround, Martinez played a decisive role as Argentina eventually triumphed in the penalty shootout.

Looking back on that unforgettable night, Martinez believes Argentina had controlled much of the contest.

“In the last final we were far superior to France for 80 minutes until their penalty, but in the end we conceded three goals and usually when you allow three goals in a final you are more likely to lose.”

He also reflected on the save that changed football history.

“I just had to make that save right at the end. Sometimes it comes off you and goes in. Against Jordan it hit me and went in. The other day it went through my legs. Thankfully in the final it didn’t.”

Better Than Ever Despite Injury

Despite entering the tournament carrying a fractured finger suffered while playing for Aston Villa in the UEFA Europa League final, Martinez believes he is performing even better than he did four years ago.

“I think I am playing better with my feet, my decision-making is much better, and I am eternally grateful to be playing in my fifth final with this team.”

Argentina Chasing More History

Victory over Spain would see Argentina become the first nation since Brazil’s 1962 team to successfully defend the World Cup title.

Martinez believes the current squad’s greatest legacy will be its relentless determination and resilience.

“The players in the team come from working-class backgrounds. Our parents have to work hard, and I think the Argentine people will remember us as hard workers who never admit defeat. Even when things are difficult, we always find a way through, just like in this World Cup.”
