Enzo Maresca calls it a ‘privilege’ to succeed Pep Guardiola at Manchester City

Enzo Maresca has described succeeding Pep Guardiola as Manchester City manager as both a privilege and an exciting challenge after officially taking charge at the Etihad Stadium.

The former Chelsea and Leicester City boss was appointed following Guardiola’s decision to step down at the end of last season, bringing an end to a remarkable 10-year reign that delivered 20 major trophies and established City as one of Europe’s dominant clubs.

Maresca honoured to follow Guardiola

Speaking at his first press conference as Manchester City head coach on Friday, the Italian paid tribute to Guardiola’s influence on modern football and admitted he is proud to be the man chosen to continue the club’s success.

“First of all, I have to say that it’s a privilege,” Maresca said.

“I’ve said many times that I consider Pep probably the best coach in the world in the last 20, 25 years.

“But again, it’s a challenge. It’s nice. It’s a privilege.”

A difficult act to follow

Replacing one of football’s most successful managers is never an easy task, with several clubs having struggled after the departure of long-serving trophy-winning coaches.

A notable example is Manchester United, who have been unable to replicate the sustained success they enjoyed under Sir Alex Ferguson since his retirement in 2013.

Maresca, however, believes Manchester City are in a much stronger position to maintain their place among the elite thanks to the stability and long-term planning behind the scenes.

Faith in City’s structure

The 46-year-old highlighted the club’s organisational strength as one of the biggest reasons for his confidence ahead of the new season.

“I think the organisation is the main thing,” he said.

“They had three managers in 17 years. This is not normal, it doesn’t happen often.

“So this is probably one of the things that I’m confident that we can do a great job.”

A new era begins at the Etihad

Maresca now faces the challenge of building on Guardiola’s extraordinary legacy while establishing his own identity at Manchester City.

With one of the strongest squads in the Premier League and a club renowned for its stability and long-term vision, City will expect to remain among the favourites for domestic and European honours under their new head coach.
