While milestones achieved by players and coaches often take centre stage, Maltese football marked a significant refereeing landmark over the weekend as Fyodor Zammit became the official with the most appearances in Malta Premier League history.

The Birżebbuġa-born referee reached the milestone on Friday when he took charge of the match between Valletta and Marsaxlokk, his 231st appearance in Malta’s top flight.

In doing so, Zammit surpassed the previous record held by fellow Birżebbuġa resident Christopher Lautier, who was also one of his mentors during the early stages of his refereeing career.

Zammit began refereeing in 2000 after previously playing football with Birżebbuġa Windmills Nursery until the age of 13.

He gradually progressed through youth and lower-division football before making his Premier League debut on December 10, 2010, when he officiated the match between Birkirkara and Hibernians.

His career took another important step forward in 2015 when he was awarded the FIFA badge, which he retained for five years.

During his time as an international referee, Zammit was entrusted with matches in UEFA competitions, including Champions League qualifying rounds and fixtures in the UEFA Youth League.

Reflecting on his achievement, Zammit said his journey in refereeing had been shaped by the support and guidance of several people, particularly his cousin Ingmar Spiteri and former FIFA officials Christopher Lautier.

Now entering his 26th season as a referee, Zammit described becoming the Premier League’s record appearance holder as an achievement carrying special significance after more than two decades in the game.

He also thanked the Malta Football Association, the MFA Referees Committee and the clubs, players and coaches he has encountered throughout his career.

Zammit reserved particular thanks for his parents, as well as his wife and children Zack and Ellie, for their continued support throughout the years.

Despite reaching 231 Premier League appearances and establishing a new benchmark for Maltese referees, Zammit has no intention of slowing down.

He said he intends to continue dedicating his passion and commitment to football for as long as he remains active as a referee.
