The second day of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games saw team Malta compete in Artistic Gymnastics and Lawn Bowls.

In Artistic Gymnastics, Team Malta composed of Philippa Busuttil, Lyana Curmi Inguanez and Sophie St John competed in the All Around and Individual qualifying events.

Malta’s three gymnasts put in a positive collective performance in Subdivision 1 of the women’s artistic gymnastics team final and individual qualifications at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow today, finishing the day with a team score of 130.750.

Philippa Busuttil had the most consistent day of the three, placing second overall in the session with 45.900. She saved her best for the balance beam, where her confident, flowing routine earned the highest beam score in the entire group, resulting in her qualifying for the final round.

Sophie St. John showed real quality throughout — her vault was one of the most impressive of the session, and her beam included a stunning sequence that drew a strong reaction. A couple of unsteady landings on floor kept her to 44.550, but her class was evident.

Lyana Curmi Inguanez scored 40.300 and had a day of personal milestones, pulling off a vault skill on the international stage for the first time, with her delight afterwards plain for all to see. Her spirit throughout was one of the highlights of the session.

Malta finished in 8th Place ahead of India, Namibia, Malaysia and New Zealand

Lawn Bowls

Malta’s Women’s Pairs – Connie and Rebecca Rixon went down 2-0 to England’s Amy Pharaoh and Sian Honnor in Round 3 of sectional play with the English pair taking the opening set 3-2 before pulling clear 8-2 in the second.

The first set was a genuinely tight affair, where Malta led 2-0 at the halfway stage before England found their range late to edge it on the final end. The second set proved more one-sided, with England building an early lead and never letting Malta back into the contest.

Malta were holding game on several occasions, only for the English skip to turn the end in her side’s favour. The decisive moment came on the third end of the second set, with Malta holding two shots, when Honnor came in with a drive to pick up the jack and hand England a four-shot advantage. With only two ends remaining, it left Malta with too much ground to make up.

In the afternoon  Shaun Parnis produced a brilliant performance to defeat Canada’s Ryan Bester, one of the sport’s most decorated bowlers, in straight sets, 8–5, 7–4.

From the very first end, Parnis controlled the match with superb draw bowling, composure, and tactical awareness. Even Bester’s trademark aggressive drives in an attempt to remove Parnis’ bowls from the head couldn’t disrupt the Maltese bowler who consistently responded with precision and confidence, resulting in him securing a brilliant straight-sets victory.

Sunday sees lawn bowls return to competition first. In the morning, the Rixon sisters compete in the Women’s Pairs, Section B, Round 4, Match 3 against Tonga, followed by a match against South Africa in the afternoon. Also in the afternoon, Shaun Parnis takes on India’s Putul Sonowal.

In the evening, artistic gymnast Philippa Busuttil competes in the Women’s All-Around final at 18:00 local time.
