Ian Poulter announces LIV Golf departure to orioritise family life

Ian Poulter announces LIV Golf exit to prioritise family and senior Golf career
English golfer Ian Poulter has announced his decision to leave LIV Golf, confirming that he will not be part of the breakaway league’s proposed LIV 2.0 relaunch as he prepares to focus on senior golf and spend more time with his family.
The 50-year-old’s announcement comes amid growing uncertainty over LIV Golf’s future, with several high-profile players reportedly moving on as the organisation considers its next steps.
Former Open Championship winner Louis Oosthuizen recently announced his departure from the circuit, while former world number one Jon Rahm is also among the prominent names linked to the changing landscape surrounding the league.
LIV Golf has faced financial challenges following the decision by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) to cut its funding in April. The organisation is now working through its financial difficulties while considering whether to wind down its existing operation or pursue a new business model.
Poulter Confirms Decision to Leave LIV Golf
Poulter revealed his decision in a lengthy statement published on X, explaining that he had carefully considered the move alongside his family and management team.
“I have decided to not move forward with being part of LIV 2.0,” Poulter wrote.
“Needless to say, it was a tough decision and one I thought about and discussed at length with my family and team.”
The Englishman explained that his priorities have changed at this stage of his life and career, with spending more time at home becoming an increasingly important consideration.
“Ultimately, the opportunity to spend more time at home with my family, reduce international travel, focus on senior golf and have the opportunity to pursue other interests was something that I felt was right for me at this stage of my life and career,” he added.
His departure marks the end of his involvement in LIV Golf as the circuit considers its future direction.
Ryder Cup Legend Reflects on LIV Golf Career
A five-time Ryder Cup player for Europe, Poulter was among the established names who joined LIV Golf ahead of its inaugural event in June 2022.
He subsequently became one of the leading figures at Majesticks GC, partnering fellow European golf stars Lee Westwood and Henrik Stenson.
Although Poulter did not secure an individual or team title during his time in LIV Golf, he has enjoyed a successful professional career, recording 17 professional victories, including three on the PGA Tour.
His decision to join LIV Golf was part of a wider shift in professional golf, as several established players accepted lucrative contracts to compete on the new circuit rather than remain exclusively with traditional tours.
Poulter was also among the most vocal defenders of the breakaway league, which has significantly influenced the professional golf landscape since its launch.
Reflecting on the changes the sport has experienced in recent years, Poulter acknowledged that the transition has not always been straightforward.
“Change is never easy and it’s fair to say professional golf has experienced plenty of it over the last few years,” he said.
“But I’ve always believed that change can create opportunity and ultimately lead to positive outcomes.”
LIV Golf Faces Uncertainty Over Its Future
Poulter’s announcement arrives at a crucial time for LIV Golf, which is attempting to determine its long-term future following changes to its funding arrangements.
The organisation has secured investment from BC Partners Credit and is considering whether to continue with a proposed LIV 2.0 model or bring its current operation to an end.
The departure of established names such as Poulter and Oosthuizen adds another layer of uncertainty as the league weighs its options.
LIV Golf initially attracted attention by offering substantial financial incentives to players willing to leave traditional tours. However, its future has become less certain following the reported withdrawal of financial support from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
The outcome of the restructuring process could have significant implications for players, teams and the wider professional golf calendar.
Poulter Turns His Attention to the Next Chapter
For Poulter, the decision represents an opportunity to adjust his professional commitments while continuing to compete in golf.
With a career spanning decades and a reputation built in large part on his performances in the Ryder Cup, the Englishman now intends to devote more attention to senior competitions and reduce the demands of international travel.
His departure also brings an end to a notable chapter in his career, having been involved with LIV Golf from its first event in 2022.
As the circuit prepares to make decisions about its next phase, Poulter’s exit highlights how changing personal priorities and uncertainty surrounding the league are influencing the choices of established professional golfers.
