Harry Kane scored twice as defending champions Bayern Munich recovered from an early setback to beat second-tier Osnabrueck 4-1 in their German Cup opener on Wednesday.

Tom Bischof and Michael Olise were also on target as Bayern Munich responded impressively after falling behind to a stunning strike from Robin Meissner.

“It’s never easy at an away ground with a very good atmosphere. They started the game with an amazing goal, and we had to stay calm,” Kane said.

“I’m happy we got the win.”

The victory took England captain Kane to 148 goals in 150 appearances across all competitions for Bayern, having joined the German giants from boyhood club Tottenham Hotspur in 2023.

Osnabrueck made a dream start when Meissner opened the scoring after just five minutes, finding the net with a superb dipping effort from outside the penalty area.

However, Bayern, who have won the German Cup 21 times, quickly restored parity. Kane reacted fastest to a rebound and fired home to level the contest.

Bischof then struck six minutes later, again capitalising on a rebound to put Bayern in control.

Olise extended the visitors’ advantage in the 73rd minute, while Kane completed his brace from the penalty spot four minutes from time to wrap up a comfortable victory.

The result keeps Bayern Munich’s DFB-Pokal title defence on track, while Osnabrueck were left to reflect on a promising start that ultimately could not produce a famous upset.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, Borussia Dortmund cruised past fifth-tier amateur side HEBC with a 5-0 victory in Hamburg.
