Liverpool face an important squad-building decision after agreeing to sell Curtis Jones to Inter Milan, with the club potentially choosing not to bring in a direct replacement for the academy graduate ahead of the new Premier League season.

Jones, 25, came through the Liverpool Academy and had attracted interest from Inter for several months. The Serie A side are now set to complete his signing after Liverpool approved a £30 million transfer.

New Liverpool coach Andoni Iraola had wanted Jones to stay at Anfield, but the two sides were unable to reach an agreement over a new contract, leaving the midfielder close to completing his move to Italy.

The biggest question for Liverpool now is how they will fill the gap left by Jones within the squad.

Liverpool are not thought to have substantial funds available for another major midfield signing, meaning the club could look internally for a solution. One player being considered is 19-year-old Trey Nyoni, who has impressed with his performances and is regarded as one of the club’s promising young talents.

Nyoni and Liverpool had previously been expected to consider loan opportunities this summer, but the teenager is now determined to fight for his place at Anfield. Sources indicate that Liverpool want to give Nyoni enough space to develop, rather than signing another senior midfielder who could limit his opportunities.

However, Liverpool’s transfer activity is far from over, with the club’s main focus now appearing to be on strengthening their attack.

The Premier League champions recently made an approach for Brighton winger Yakuba Minteh, but their reported £50 million offer was rejected.

Liverpool are also reportedly exploring a major move for Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola, while talks have taken place with PSG regarding a potential deal for 18-year-old Ibrahim Mbaye.

Jones’ departure therefore leaves Liverpool facing a balancing act: maintaining midfield depth while continuing their pursuit of high-profile attacking reinforcements.
