Manchester City midfielder Rodri has undergone minor back surgery, the Premier League champions confirmed on Tuesday.

The 2024 Ballon d’Or winner, who captained Spain during this summer’s international campaign, had been dealing with persistent back discomfort before deciding to undergo a minor procedure.

In an official statement, Manchester City said: “The midfielder had been feeling discomfort for some time but has now undergone a procedure to address the issue and will now begin a short period of rehabilitation.”

The club did not provide a timeframe for the 30-year-old’s return. However, reports in the British media suggest Rodri could miss the start of the 2026/27 Premier League season, which gets underway on 21 August.

Despite the setback, the surgery is understood to be a minor procedure, with the midfielder expected to return after a brief rehabilitation period.

Rodri has battled significant injury problems in recent years, including a serious knee injury, but remains one of Manchester City’s most influential players. With just one year remaining on his current contract, the Spanish international has also been heavily linked with a potential move to Real Madrid.
