Lionel Messi returns as Inter Miami held by Columbus Crew, Whitecaps and LAFC stay level

Lionel Messi made his long-awaited return to Major League Soccer on Saturday, coming off the bench as Inter Miami were held to a 2-2 draw by Columbus Crew.

The Argentine superstar was back in action just two weeks after helping his country reach the FIFA World Cup final, replacing a teammate in the 53rd minute to a rousing reception from supporters at Miami’s Nu Stadium.

Although Messi was unable to find the net on his return, firing two efforts wide of the target, Luis Suarez continued his impressive scoring form. The veteran striker opened the scoring in the 16th minute, netting for the seventh time in his last four league appearances.

Columbus responded in the 34th minute after an unfortunate own goal from former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro brought the visitors level.

Suarez then turned provider before the break, delivering a cross that Noah Allen headed home to restore Miami’s advantage and give the hosts a 2-1 lead at half-time.

However, Columbus earned a share of the points late on when Brais Mendez, making his debut following his move from Real Sociedad, curled a superb free-kick into the top corner in the 84th minute.

The draw snapped Inter Miami’s six-match winning streak, leaving them second in the MLS Eastern Conference, behind leaders Nashville SC, who were also forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against DC United.

Whitecaps and LAFC remain locked at the top

In the MLS Western Conference, Los Angeles FC and the Vancouver Whitecaps stayed level on points after playing out a 1-1 draw at BC Place.

Former Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min continued his excellent form since the league resumed following the World Cup, scoring for the fourth consecutive match to give LAFC the lead in the 37th minute.

The Whitecaps responded in the second half, with German forward Thomas Mueller calmly converting a penalty in the 76th minute to secure a point for the hosts.

Son’s impressive week also included being named MLS All-Star Game MVP, adding another individual accolade after returning from international duty despite South Korea’s disappointing World Cup campaign.
