NBA roundup: Grizzlies extend unbeaten run as Maxey Leads Sixers’ comeback

Tyrese Maxey delivered a spectacular 38-point performance to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to a 109-104 comeback victory over the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Memphis Grizzlies maintained their unbeaten start to the NBA season, moving within one victory of setting a new franchise record.
Maxey inspires Sixers comeback
Star guard Tyrese Maxey scored 15 of his 38 points in the fourth quarter as Philadelphia (6-1) overturned a 13-point deficit to secure its fourth comeback victory of more than 10 points this season.
The Sixers once again demonstrated their fighting spirit, although Maxey admitted he would prefer his team to avoid falling behind so often.
“I don’t want to do that. I’m tired of doing that,” Maxey said about the team’s comeback victories.
“This group is full of fighters. We went up, went down, came back.
“We’re very competitive. The game is not over until it’s over, and that’s what I really like about this group. We don’t like losing. We keep the game close, it’s going to be tough to beat us.”
Anfernee Simons contributed 19 points off the bench, while Jaylen Brown added 16 for Philadelphia.
For Charlotte (3-4), reserve guard Grayson Allen led the scoring with 27 points, while Brandon Miller finished with 24 in the defeat.
LeBron James and Joel Embiid both missed the contest after sitting out Friday’s victory over the New York Knicks. James was rested due to lower-back sciatica, while Embiid was sidelined with soreness in his right foot.
With both stars unavailable, Maxey took responsibility and delivered when his team needed him most.
“I always trust somebody is going to be open, and I’m going to make the right decision,” Maxey said. “We have a lot of different weapons to go to, a lot of options, and we’re very competitive.”
Maxey had already scored 19 points in the first half, helping Philadelphia take a 57-54 advantage into the break. Allen, meanwhile, had 19 points on seven-of-eight shooting for the Hornets.
Charlotte controlled much of the second half, but Maxey’s two free throws with 1:22 remaining gave Philadelphia a narrow 102-101 lead.
Rookie V.J. Edgecombe then delivered a crucial step-back three-pointer before Maxey converted two more free throws to extend the advantage to 107-101 with 23.8 seconds remaining
“I told him, ‘Don’t pass me the ball. Do what you do. You always hit big shots like this,'” Maxey revealed about his message to Edgecombe.
“So he did it again.”
Miller briefly brought Charlotte closer with a three-pointer, but Brown converted two free throws to confirm the Sixers’ victory.
Grizzlies remain unbeaten with dominant win
The Memphis Grizzlies continued their outstanding start to the campaign with a convincing 136-105 victory over the winless Sacramento Kings.
Rookie sensation Cameron Boozer led Memphis with 27 points as the Grizzlies improved their record to 6-0, remaining the NBA’s only undefeated team.
Another victory would see Memphis establish a new franchise record for the best start to a season.
Despite Sacramento’s struggles, Darius Acuff delivered an impressive individual performance, finishing with 38 points.
Wembanyama dominates as Spurs beat Timberwolves
At San Antonio, Victor Wembanyama produced an outstanding display, scoring 43 points, grabbing seven rebounds and recording six blocks to lead the Spurs to a 121-111 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Dylan Harper contributed 25 points, while De’Aaron Fox added 22 as San Antonio improved to 4-2.
Rockets bounce back against Thunder
The Houston Rockets responded strongly to their first defeat of the season with a comfortable 119-98 home victory over an injury-hit Oklahoma City Thunder.
Jabari Smith Jr. led Houston with 30 points, helping the Rockets improve to 6-1.
“Losing rubbed us the wrong way, so we didn’t want to lose two in a row,” Smith said. “We wanted to come out here ready to play, and we got it done.”
Marcus Smart added 24 points, while Kevin Durant contributed 14. Alperen Sengun also impressed with 16 points, nine rebounds and nine assists.
Cavaliers cruise past Bucks
The Cleveland Cavaliers secured an impressive 136-111 road victory against the Milwaukee Bucks.
Evan Mobley led Cleveland with 27 points, while Jarrett Allen recorded 25 points and 11 rebounds to help his team dominate the contest
Pelicans and Trail Blazers also claim victories
The New Orleans Pelicans enjoyed a comfortable 121-99 win over the Atlanta Hawks.
Reserve forward Saddiq Bey led the way with 25 points, while Jeremiah Fears added another 20.
Meanwhile, the Portland Trail Blazers improved to 4-1 after beating the Utah Jazz 112-90.
Deni Avdija scored 24 points, while Damian Lillard contributed 22 to help Portland secure another convincing victory. Utah dropped to 1-5 following the defeat.
