Monday’s Premier League schedule saw Leeds United welcome Newcastle United to Elland Road, with the hosts looking to end a run without a victory over the Magpies dating back to January 2021.

Both sides entered the contest level on points, while Matthias Jaissle’s Newcastle had made a solid start to the campaign. Like Daniel Farke’s Leeds, they were still unbeaten in the Premier League during the 2026/27 season.

Elanga left out

The previous meeting between the two sides produced an extraordinary seven-goal contest, with Harvey Barnes eventually settling the match for Newcastle in the 102nd minute. It was the second-latest goal ever scored in Premier League history.

However, another goal-filled encounter looked less likely when the starting line-ups were announced. Farke chose a 3-5-2 system for Leeds, seemingly designed to deal with the attacking threat posed by Newcastle, while Jaissle lined his side up in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Anthony Elanga, who has been a key attacking threat for Newcastle in several matches this season, missed the game through injury. His absence was immediately noticeable, with the visitors lacking their usual pace in the final third from the opening whistle.

Backed by a passionate home crowd, Leeds started on the front foot and put Newcastle under sustained pressure. The hosts had already registered six attempts during the opening 30 minutes, while the Magpies had yet to manage a single effort on goal.

Two goals in two minutes for Leeds

Newcastle’s difficult start was made even worse when Nico Gonzalez was forced off early in the match, leaving Jaissle’s side facing an uphill battle almost from the outset.

Leeds were rewarded for their early dominance in the 32nd minute when a Newcastle shot was deflected into his own goal by Lewis Miley. Just two minutes later, Jayden Bogle doubled the hosts’ advantage with a well-taken header, leaving the visitors facing a daunting task.

The situation was particularly notable given Newcastle’s recent history against Leeds. The last occasion on which Leeds had taken the lead before going on to lose was against the Magpies in that January meeting. Coincidentally, that was also the most recent match in which Newcastle had fallen behind but ultimately fought back to secure victory.

Newcastle were forced to put in a huge defensive effort, with Lewis Hall standing out in the battle for possession. He won three of the four tackles he attempted and came out on top in nine of his 15 individual duels.

The visitors had five players who contested at least 10 duels during the match. Sven Botman and Amar Dedic also made an impact defensively, with both players regaining possession on four occasions.

Jaissle far from satisfied

Although Newcastle’s performance was not necessarily chaotic, the visitors lacked cohesion and struggled to maintain control of the ball. Their high number of turnovers highlighted the problems they faced throughout the encounter.

Jacob Murphy was among the biggest culprits, giving possession away 14 times. Five other Newcastle players also lost the ball on at least 10 occasions, further underlining the Magpies’ struggles to build consistent attacks.

Despite representing Brazil together, Coutinho and Neymar have never played alongside each other at club level.

Coutinho, who last featured for the national team in March 2022, returned to his boyhood club Vasco da Gama in 2024. His spell with the Brazilian side ended in February this year, however, as he moved on after less than two seasons.

Neymar, 34, returned to Santos last year, marking his comeback to the club where he began his professional career. He subsequently announced his retirement from international football following Brazil’s elimination from the World Cup in July.

Calvert-Lewin and Bogle remained a constant threat to Newcastle, with Bogle producing an impressive attacking display. He finished the match with five touches inside the opposition penalty area and registered three shots, all of which were on target.

Lewis Hall provides a rare positive for Newcastle

Calvert-Lewin also enjoyed a productive outing, putting two of his four attempts on target. His eight touches inside the penalty area were more than any other player on the pitch.

For Jaissle, one of the few positives to take from the defeat was Lewis Hall’s performance. The defender impressed with his distribution, contributing effectively both when Newcastle were attacking and when they were required to defend.

Hall was highly reliable in possession throughout the match, completing 49 of his 50 attempted passes over the 90-plus minutes. His remarkable 98% passing accuracy was the highest recorded by any player in the game.

Even so, his individual performance could not prevent Newcastle from being overwhelmed by Leeds’ relentless attacking pressure.

Leeds continued to dominate after the interval and had registered 12 attempts on goal before the hour mark. Their 13th effort finally produced another breakthrough in the 59th minute, when Okafor curled a fine finish into the net to make it four.

Consolation goal at the death

With the result effectively decided, Newcastle were able to attack with greater freedom. The visitors managed to produce several attempts without an immediate response from Leeds, although it was also clear that the hosts had eased off the intensity as the match entered its final stages.

After conceding the fourth goal, Newcastle enjoyed 69% possession for the remainder of the contest. However, the statistic offered little comfort to the travelling supporters, who would have wished to see that level of control much earlier in the match.

Bazoumana Toure’s 90th-minute strike was little more than a consolation for Newcastle, who had to return to Tyneside with a heavy defeat. In truth, the visitors did little during the match to justify earning anything more from the contest.

Although Newcastle have now scored in each of their four league matches this season, that positive record will offer limited comfort to Jaissle and his coaching staff as they assess a disappointing performance at Elland Road.
