Newcastle-linked Victor Froholdt helps FC Porto secure Portuguese Super Cup

Victor Froholdt fires FC Porto to Portuguese Super Cup glory amid Newcastle links
FC Porto kicked off the new season by lifting the Portuguese Super Cup, defeating Torreense 1-0 at the Estádio Cidade de Coimbra on Saturday evening to secure the club’s 25th title in the competition.
The decisive moment came in the 38th minute when Victor Froholdt, who continues to be linked with a move to Newcastle United, scored the only goal of the match to hand the Dragons another piece of silverware against the reigning Portuguese Cup holders.
Speaking after the victory, Froholdt said winning another trophy with Porto was a special achievement and highlighted the club’s remarkable success in Portuguese football.
“It means a lot to win another trophy. Being the club with the most titles in Portugal is very good, and we have to be proud of what we have achieved,” he said.
“It’s great to score, but the way we fought was incredible. I want to send a message to the fans. It was amazing to feel the support in the stands. We are the Portuguese club with the most trophies, with 88. It’s a huge achievement, and we have to be proud.”
Victor Froholdt continues impressive rise
The 20-year-old Denmark international, who was named Portuguese Player of the Year last season, once again showed his quality on the big stage.
After Pepe delivered an inviting cross from the left flank, Froholdt timed his run perfectly before powering a header beyond the goalkeeper to score what proved to be the match-winning goal.
The midfielder’s performance is unlikely to go unnoticed, with speculation surrounding his future continuing to grow.
Newcastle United monitoring Froholdt
Reports have linked Newcastle United with renewed interest in Froholdt as the club prepares for the possibility of losing Bruno Guimarães.
The Magpies are said to view the Danish midfielder as a leading candidate to replace the Brazilian should he complete a move to Arsenal. However, FC Porto are expected to demand a fee close to Froholdt’s €85 million release clause before considering any transfer.
Despite the ongoing speculation, Froholdt refused to be drawn into discussions about his future and insisted his focus remains on Porto.
“People talk about taking the next step, but for me, FC Porto is a huge club. I’m already focused on the next match in the league,” he said.
Following their Portuguese Super Cup triumph, the defending champions will begin their Primeira Liga title defence at the Estádio do Dragão when they host FC Alverca on August 9.
