Bournemouth complete signing of António Silva from Benfica

Bournemouth have bolstered their defensive options with the signing of Portugal international António Silva from Benfica, the Premier League club confirmed on Saturday.

According to reports, the Cherries paid around £26 million ($35 million) to secure the highly-rated centre-back, who arrives ahead of the club’s historic first campaign in European competition.

Silva Replaces Marcos Senesi

The 22-year-old is expected to fill the void left by Marcos Senesi, who departed Bournemouth to join Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer earlier this summer.

Silva arrives with an impressive résumé despite his young age, having established himself as one of Portugal’s brightest defensive talents during his time at Benfica.

Outstanding Record at Benfica

During his spell with Benfica, Silva made 235 appearances across all competitions and played a key role in the club’s Primeira Liga title-winning campaign in 2022-23.

His outstanding performances were recognised when he was named the league’s Defender of the Year, further enhancing his reputation as one of Europe’s most promising young centre-backs.

Silva has also become a regular member of the Portugal national team and was part of the squad that lifted the UEFA Nations League trophy last year.

Bournemouth Delighted with New Arrival

Bournemouth president of football operations Tiago Pinto welcomed the signing, highlighting Silva’s experience despite being only 22 years old.

“Despite his age, António has already gained exceptional experience at one of Europe’s biggest clubs. We’re delighted to bring him to Bournemouth.”

The Cherries hope Silva’s arrival will strengthen their backline as they prepare for another demanding campaign.

European Adventure Awaits

Bournemouth are set to make history this season by competing in European football for the first time after securing qualification for the UEFA Europa League.

Their Premier League campaign begins on August 23, when they travel to face defending champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
