PSL record watch: Historic milestones that could fall in the 2026/27 betway Premiership season

The 2026/27 Betway Premiership season gets underway next week, with Orlando Pirates beginning the defence of the league title they wrestled away from Mamelodi Sundowns last season.

As a new campaign begins, several long-standing PSL and South African football records could come under threat. From title triumphs and goalscoring feats to defensive dominance and individual milestones, here are some of the biggest records worth watching throughout the season.

Most League Titles

Mamelodi Sundowns remain the most successful club in PSL history with 18 league titles, comfortably ahead of Kaizer Chiefs, who have won the championship 13 times.

The Brazilians also hold the record for the longest run of consecutive league crowns, winning eight straight titles between 2018 and 2025 before Orlando Pirates ended their dominance by lifting the trophy last season.

Most Points in a PSL Season

Sundowns set the benchmark for the highest points total in a 30-match PSL campaign after collecting 73 points during the 2023/24 season. They equalled that tally the following campaign despite the league being played over only 28 matches.

Across all South African top-flight seasons, the record stands at 75 points, jointly held by Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs, who achieved the feat during the 1998/99 season when teams played 34 league matches.

Most Wins in a Season

Another record belongs to Mamelodi Sundowns, who won an incredible 24 league matches during the 2024/25 campaign.

Remarkably, that achievement came in just 28 fixtures, with Sundowns drawing one game and losing only three all season.

Longest Winning Streak

The longest winning run in PSL history belongs to Sundowns, who won 15 consecutive league matches under Rhulani Mokwena during the 2022/23 season.

That eclipsed the club’s previous record of 11 straight victories under Gordon Igesund in 2006/07 before the streak finally ended with a draw against Stellenbosch FC.

The all-time South African record remains 17 successive league wins, achieved by Kaizer Chiefs during their dominant 1991 championship-winning campaign.

Most Home Wins

Sundowns enjoyed a perfect home campaign during the 2024/25 season, winning all 14 home league matches.

They scored 40 goals while conceding just three, producing one of the most dominant home records ever seen in the South African top flight.

Most Away Wins

The record for the most away victories in a season is shared by Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns.

Chiefs claimed 11 away wins on their way to the 2014/15 title under Stuart Baxter, while Sundowns matched the achievement during the 2023/24 campaign.

Worst Away Record

One record unlikely to ever be broken belongs to Mother City, who lost all 17 away matches during the 1999/2000 season, scoring only seven goals while conceding 57.

In the 30-match era, Mpumalanga Black Aces endured a miserable campaign in 2011, winning just one of their 15 away fixtures. Ironically, that lone victory came against eventual champions Orlando Pirates.

Most Team Goals

Kaizer Chiefs still hold the overall scoring record after netting 73 league goals during the 1998/99 season.

For a 30-match campaign, the benchmark belongs to Mamelodi Sundowns, who scored 65 goals in 2024/25.

Most Goals by a Player

Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Collins Mbesuma remains the league’s most prolific goalscorer in a single season after scoring 25 goals during the 2004/05 campaign.

The closest anyone has come in recent years was Peter Shalulile, who struck 23 goals for Mamelodi Sundowns in 2021/22.

Fewest Goals Conceded

Defensively, Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns share the record after conceding just 11 league goals in a season.

Chiefs achieved the feat during their 2003/04 title-winning campaign under Ted Dumitru, while Sundowns matched the mark in 2023/24.

Orlando Pirates came close last season after allowing only 12 goals.

Most Clean Sheets by a Team

The clean-sheet record is jointly held by Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, with both clubs recording 21 shutouts in a single league season.

Chiefs first reached the mark in 2003/04, while Pirates equalled it on their way to last season’s championship.

Most Clean Sheets by a Goalkeeper

Sipho Chaine set a new league record during the title-winning 2025/26 season after keeping 21 clean sheets for Orlando Pirates.

He surpassed the previous best of 18, held by Ronwen Williams of Mamelodi Sundowns.

Best Goal Difference

Sundowns continue to dominate another statistical category after recording a remarkable +52 goal difference during the 2024/25 season.

Although they still finished as runners-up last season with a goal difference of +36, the record remains comfortably theirs.

Biggest Title-Winning Margin

The largest championship-winning margin also belongs to Mamelodi Sundowns.

Their 23-point triumph during the 2023/24 campaign comfortably eclipsed their previous record of 16 points.

Most League Titles by a Player

Veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango is the most decorated player in PSL history with 12 league titles.

Three of those came with SuperSport United, while the remaining nine have been won with Mamelodi Sundowns.

Fastest Goal

The fastest goal in South African professional football history has been scored after 10 seconds, a feat achieved on three occasions.

Abednigo “Shaka” Ngcobo is credited with reaching the mark for Kaizer Chiefs, while Aleni Lebyane matched it for Free State Stars in a televised PSL fixture against Santos in 2001.

More recently, Peter Shalulile also found the net after just 10 seconds for Mamelodi Sundowns against Kaizer Chiefs in an MTN8 semi-final.

Youngest Player and Goalscorer

The record for the youngest player to appear in a top-flight South African match belongs to Mkhanyiseli Siwahla.

Aged just 15 years, five months and 22 days, he made his debut for Ajax Cape Town against Dynamos in 2004 before also becoming the youngest goalscorer in the country’s professional era.

Oldest Player

Former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Andre Arendse is the oldest player to feature in South African professional football.

He appeared for Bidvest Wits at the age of 45 years, 10 months and four days in 2013 after coming out of retirement to help the club through an injury crisis, breaking the long-standing record previously held by Trevor Gething.

With another Betway Premiership season about to begin, several of these remarkable achievements could once again come under pressure as South Africa’s top clubs and players chase a place in the history books.
