In what will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the most enthralling encounters of the FIFA World Cup 2026™, Gonçalo Ramos scored a dramatic, late winner to send Portugal through to the next round. Roberto Martínez’s side showed incredible resilience, coming from behind at Toronto Stadium to edge Croatia 2-1 in a relentless Round of 32 tug-of-war.

The match also featured a crucial goal from Cristiano Ronaldo, but it was Ramos who ultimately stole the headlines in the dying seconds of stoppage time.

A Frustrated First Half

Eight minutes into the second half, Croatia broke the deadlock. Nikola Vlašić and Josip Stanišić combined smoothly down the right wing, resulting in a Stanišić cross that found Ivan Perišić, who clinically fired home at the far post to give Croatia a 1-0 lead.

Croatia believed they had doubled their advantage shortly after when Vlašić crossed for Igor Matanovic to slide home, but the Torino forward was correctly ruled offside.

Then came the 94th minute. The ever-lively Leão delivered a tantalizing cross into the center of the box. Gonçalo Ramos rose highest, planting a powerful header into the net and sparking scenes of pure delirium on the Portugal bench.

Even then, the drama wasn’t finished. In the final seconds of the match, a desperate ‘Hail Mary’ pass into the Portugal box was squared by Mario Pašalić for Joško Gvardiol to tap home what Croatia thought was a last-gasp equalizer. However, a tense VAR review revealed that Pašalić was in an offside position, disallowed the goal, and blew the final whistle.
