High on Effort, Low on Chances

The first half was punctuated by perspiration rather than inspiration. Ghana’s backline stood tall against wave after wave of England pressure. The Three Lions struggled to break through the resolute African defense, with their only real half-chance of the opening period coming from a looping Declan Rice header that cleared the crossbar.

England continued to push after the break. Elliot Anderson saw a close-range header blocked, before Anthony Gordon fired a shot directly into the midriff of Ghanaian goalkeeper Benjamin Asare. England captain Harry Kane was next to try his luck with a low drive, but Asare was equal to the task once again.

Late Drama at Both Ends

While defending resolutely, Ghana remained a constant threat on the counterattack. With just under ten minutes remaining, they carved the English defense wide open. Abdul Fatawu was played clean through on Jordan Pickford; though Ezri Konsa managed to track back and foil the winger’s initial attempt, Fatawu’s second effort was inadvertently blocked right on the goalline by his own teammate, Antoine Semenyo.

England saved their best opportunities for the 87th minute. A flowing team move found Reece James, who delivered a cross to Nico O’Reilly, only for the substitute’s back-post header to crash off the crossbar. The loose ball fell kindly to Kane, but the prolific striker uncharacteristically blazed his effort high into the Boston sky.
