Cutting across the penalty area from the left wing, Álex Baena elegantly controlled a low cross from Marcos Llorente and unleashed a shot toward the Uruguayan goal. Veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera uncharacteristically failed to hold the strike, watching in agony as the ball dribbled past him and into the far corner to give Spain the lead.

Half-Time Changes and Late Drama

Desperate to claw their way back into the match and salvage their World Cup dream, Uruguay made a statement change at half-time, substituting the erring Muslera for backup goalkeeper Sergio Rochet.
