The Royal Malta Yacht Club, in collaboration with Vikings Sailing Club, will once again host Steering the Course, the World Sailing initiative aimed at promoting gender equity within the sport.

Backed by the International Olympic Committee, the initiative returns to Malta for its fourth edition and will form part of the Yachting Malta Race Week programme.

The event has proved increasingly popular locally, selling out on each occasion it has been held, and the 2026 edition is no exception. All available places have already been taken, with a waiting list now open for those still interested in participating.

Steering the Course is being supported by Yachting Malta, Camilleri Marine and Boost.

The programme will take place over three afternoon sessions, starting on September 15, with two training sessions followed by a final session featuring races in Marsamxett Harbour.

Participants will train aboard the Royal Malta Yacht Club’s RS Quests, boats particularly suited to beginners and mixed-ability crews.

Each boat will carry an instructor together with three sailors, while participants will also receive on-land training before taking to the water to ensure crews are properly prepared.

This year’s theme, ‘Give to Gain’, is drawn from the 2026 International Women’s Day and highlights the importance of providing support, mentorship and opportunities to help women and girls fulfil their potential.

The initiative seeks to create pathways for more women and girls to become involved in sailing, not only as athletes but also as coaches, race officials and leaders within the sport.

The theme is particularly relevant to this year’s Maltese edition, with the entire organising committee consisting of women working across logistics, marketing, media, coaching and administration.

Francesca Vincenti to share her story

The programme will also feature a talk by two-time Sportswoman of the Year and Maltese Olympic Committee Hall of Fame inductee Francesca Vincenti.

Entitled ‘Against the Wind: Breaking Barriers and Never Letting Go’, the talk will see Vincenti reflect on the highlights and challenges of her sporting career.

Among her achievements was a bronze medal at the 1983 World Championship in Bermuda, with much of her career pursued without the backing of a national team.

Vincenti will share her experiences of overcoming obstacles during her career and the determination required to succeed at the highest level.

The talk will be free to attend, although registration is required.
