Sunderland have reportedly reached an agreement to sign Lyon winger Malick Fofana, with the 21-year-old having been offered to Arsenal earlier in the transfer window.

Fofana has been given permission by Lyon to travel for a medical with Sunderland before completing a five-year contract, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

The transfer is reportedly worth £25.7 million, with a further £4.3 million available in potential add-ons.

The necessary paperwork is yet to be completed, but Sunderland are confident of getting the deal over the line before Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

Arsenal had been weighing up whether to meet Lyon’s asking price for Fofana after the winger was offered to the Premier League side in the final days of the window.

Fofana would become Sunderland’s fourth signing of the summer, following Thomas Meunier, Dayann Methalie and Jules Ahoka. The Black Cats are also expected to complete a separate deal for Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Danso.

The winger has made a strong start to the season, scoring twice in six appearances for Lyon. Since joining the French club, Fofana has also found the net 19 times in Ligue 1 across two-and-a-half years.

Fofana will now begin a new chapter under Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris, with the Black Cats also preparing to compete in the Europa League this season.
