Switzerland booked their place in the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup 2026™ with the minimum of fuss, swatting Algeria aside 2-0 at BC Place Vancouver.

Early goals in each half from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye steered Murat Yakin’s clinical side into the knockout rounds for the fourth consecutive World Cup competition.

The defeat carried a touch of irony for Algeria coach Vladimir Petkovic, who previously managed the Swiss national team between 2014 and 2021. Despite his intimate familiarity with the opposition, his side lacked the tactical edge to trouble a highly disciplined Switzerland.

A Blistering Start and Second-Half Stunner

Switzerland took control of the encounter almost immediately. In just the 10th minute, Johan Manzambi embarked on a determined, powerful run into the penalty area, driving all the way to the byline. Manzambi expertly cut the ball back into the six-yard box, allowing Breel Embolo to calmly tuck it home and give the Swiss an early cushion.

Algeria managed to weather the storm for the remainder of the first half without conceding another. Petkovic undoubtedly hoped to use the interval to impart tactical wisdom to spark a turnaround, but his plans evaporated within 60 seconds of the restart.

Right after the kick-off for the second half, Algerian defender Rafik Belghali attempted to clear a dangerous ball, but it only traveled as far as the edge of the box. Dan Ndoye capitalized instantly, controlling the half-clearance just inside the area before calmly slotting it beyond the despairing dive of goalkeeper Luca Zidane to make it 2-0.

Unshakeable Swiss Defense

Facing a team that entered the match with a stellar record of just one defeat in their last 17 games, Algeria was left with a mountain to climb.

The North African side struggled heavily to create any rhythm or clear-cut opportunities. Switzerland’s rigid defensive structure effortlessly kept Algeria at arm’s length for the remainder of the match, successfully seeing out the 2-0 victory with minimal drama.

Having efficiently navigated their Round of 32 assignment, the Swiss will not need to pack their bags just yet. Switzerland will remain in Vancouver to prepare for their Round of 16 fixture on 7 July, where they will face the winner of the upcoming clash between Colombia and Ghana.
