Tottenham overcome Coventry to end wait for first league win

Tottenham Hotspur finally secured their first Premier League victory of the season at the seventh attempt, defeating Coventry City 3-1 thanks to stunning goals from James Maddison and Omar Marmoush, before substitute Ben Davies sealed the result in stoppage time.
The Sky Blues hoped to strike early and put pressure on the visitors, but Tottenham survived an early scare when Jan Paul van Hecke bravely blocked a powerful effort from Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, who was making his first Premier League start.
Instead, Tottenham took the lead after 14 minutes through a superb strike from Maddison. The midfielder curled an excellent effort into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area, marking a special moment for the Coventry youth product, who had neither started a match nor scored since May 2025.
Spurs looked to build on their advantage, and Dominic Solanke thought he had doubled the lead five minutes later, only for his effort to be ruled out for offside. Despite enjoying possession, however, the visitors struggled to create clear-cut chances.
Solanke fired over the crossbar late in the first half, while Micky van de Ven produced a crucial last-ditch tackle to deny Brandon Thomas-Asante before the interval.
Tottenham appeared comfortable after the break, but their advantage disappeared four minutes into the second half. Jack Rudoni reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the penalty area and squeezed his effort past Antonin Kinsky, scoring for the second consecutive match to bring Coventry level.
The equaliser prompted Roberto De Zerbi’s side to increase the intensity, and their response paid off nine minutes later. Omar Marmoush restored Tottenham’s lead with a brilliant curling strike from 18 yards, finding the far corner to score his first goal in Spurs colours.
Another memorable moment arrived late in the contest when Dejan Kulusevski came off the bench to make his first appearance in 526 days following a lengthy spell on the sidelines with injuries.
Tottenham continued pushing for a third goal, having last scored three or more times in a league match in October 2025. Their persistence was rewarded deep into stoppage time when substitute Ben Davies fired home his second goal of the season to complete the 3-1 victory.
The result represents only Tottenham’s fourth home win in their last 26 Premier League matches, a run that also includes seven draws and 15 defeats. Nevertheless, the victory provides a welcome boost, lifting Spurs off the bottom of the table and into 16th place.
Meanwhile, Coventry City dropped to 17th, sitting below Tottenham on goal difference after suffering a sixth consecutive defeat against the North London club.
