The four quarter-finals played on Tuesday produced some extraordinary tennis, with Ben Shelton’s stunning victory over defending champion Carlos Alcaraz bringing an end to one of the most memorable days of this year’s Grand Slam.

The question now is whether today’s action can match that drama.

Rybakina eyes historic No. 1 ranking

First up, Elena Rybakina takes on Chinese star Qinwen Zheng for a place in the semi-finals, but there is considerably more at stake for the Kazakh.

Victory would see Rybakina become world No. 1 for the first time in her career and end Aryna Sabalenka’s remarkable run of 99 consecutive weeks at the top of the rankings.

Rybakina was in impressive form during her fourth-round victory over Naomi Osaka, but she now faces one of the tournament’s biggest comeback stories in Zheng.

The former world No. 4 and Olympic champion has endured a difficult 18 months because of a serious arm injury, but she has returned to form at exactly the right time.

After coming through qualifying, Zheng has produced a series of remarkable performances, defeating both Madison Keys and Iga Swiatek.

On both occasions, she showed incredible resilience, fighting back from 0-5 down in a set to secure victory.

Gauff faces Andreeva in blockbuster clash

The second women’s quarter-final promises another major showdown, with young stars Coco Gauff and Mirra Andreeva going head-to-head.

Former champion Gauff has been widely tipped as one of the leading contenders to win her third Grand Slam title, but Andreeva is beginning to rediscover her best form.

The teenager enjoyed a breakthrough triumph at Roland Garros earlier this year and has gradually regained momentum after experiencing a slight dip following her success in Paris.

However, Gauff will take confidence from their previous meetings. The American leads the head-to-head record 5-0, suggesting she has enjoyed considerable success against Andreeva in the past.

Men’s quarter-finals follow

The men’s action then gets underway, with former semi-finalist Karen Khachanov facing Belgian breakthrough star Alexander Blockx.

Blockx has been one of the surprise performers at this year’s tournament, but his progress was threatened by an injury during his last-16 victory.

It remains unclear whether the Belgian will be fit enough to take his place on court for this crucial quarter-final.

Zverev looks to avoid another late finish

The final match of the day sees top seed Alexander Zverev take on Botic van de Zandschulp.

Zverev will be eager to avoid another late-night finish as he continues his pursuit of a second Grand Slam title.

The German has emerged as a serious contender after winning the French Open earlier this year, but Van de Zandschulp could provide another difficult challenge.

The Dutchman will have to recover quickly after an exhausting five-hour, 20-minute thriller in the previous round.
